I am amazed that this issue still exists. Closing this loophole was proposed on a regular basis in the public forum in the 1980's and still nothing has been done. Our congress in action. We can make disparaging remarks against our soldiers, interfere with immigrations enforcement, but we cant do a single thing to close a simple loophole in the constitution.

Yes! Unfortunately.
See, nothing in the Constitution actually allows for birthright citizenship to children born to aliens within our borders.
The closest thing is the "Citizenship Clause" of the 14th Amendment.
But read the debates from the senate floor that lead to the ratification of the 14th Amendment. You'll never see any indication, inference, implication or outright suggestion that the first clause of the Amendment - the citizenship clause - should, under any circumstances or excuses - apply to aliens' babies.

Yes, and that's why I support HR 1940 which would end the loophole. So does my Congressman, who's quite a bit brighter and far more patriotic than one of my Senators.

Maybe it would be a good thing for all children to inherit the same citizenship as their parents. Unless of course, the parents have legal permanent residency - then I think their children should be U.S. citizens. That seems fair. :-)

Of course it needs to be shut, the gaming of our laws to get subsidies from our services is ridiculous. That is why every EU country that had it has ended automatic birthright citizenship.

Well, I'm almost inclined to agree with you.
The mexicans come here illigally and have
babies faster than rabbits can pop out little
bunnies. If this keeps up in ten years there
will be more mexicans here than any other
race. Watch out Canada, you are next for
the invasion.

It would take a constitutional amendment, which probably isn't going to happen anytime soon.
The HR bill is just a publicity ploy to get votes.

Yes, We as U.S. citizens pay for them. If they have the money to pay for the baby in the U.S. then they are "buying" citizenship. Are we really for sale? Hopefully the laws will change soon.
