Waiting until Nov 2nd is kind of pushing it, especially if you are having pain now. Yes, the antibiotic will help as long as you are taking it and finish the entire script, don't stop taking it if the pain starts to subside.
If you can either get in with your dentist sooner or get into a root canal specialist (Endodontist) sooner, they may be able to do a pulpotomy to at least get you comfortable. If it is a scheduling problem try to take the soonest appointment they have available instead of requesting a specific time of day. Sometimes people request the latest appointment of the day and that can take several weeks in a busy office.
In the worst case scenario ask for a refill on that antibiotic script and that may hold you over, but that would be the very last option, you may be playing with fire if you try to hold out until Nov 2. Best of luck.

You have an infection at the end of your tooth usually caused by bacteria that has some how entered usually through decay or a missing filling, etc. The pain is caused by the swelling in your gum area in and around your infected tooth. It can get so bad that your gums, jaw, and even face could swell. The antibiotics should kill the bacteria. Don't miss taking the doses of antibiotics!!! The pain and swelling should go down once the bacteria is killed by the antibiotics. It is best to undergo the ten day treatment before the root canal. A root canal may initially hurt if the nerve (pulp) of your tooth is still alive. The dentist will numb you before the root canal procedure. This is the only part that really "hurts". The point of the root canal is to remove your damaged nerves and infected areas, treat the infected interior of the tooth, and eventually fill and seal the tooth permanently. It takes 2-3 trips to the dentist to complete a root canal. The 2nd and 3rd trips don't hurt at all because your tooth is officially dead once the nerve is removed. He won't need to numb you anymore. The dentist will use a series of small rod shaped files to scrape down the root areas. He will fill and pack your tooth at least once or twice with medicine before sealing your tooth permanently. This will keep your tooth a while longer. I've had the procedure, and it was a relief to have it done. It took about three weeks to complete.

Yes you need to have this abscess looked at and treated ASAP. An abscess is a stagnant body of bacteria. However the infection can get into the blood stream and cause sepsis. You need to have this tooth treated as well as the abscess. Most doctors will not treat a patient with an active infection. They will delay treatment until the infection is gone. Tell your Doctor of the issue before your scheduled root canal in a few weeks. He will most likely call you in an antibiotic.

Get a bottle of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE at the drug store.
This is an excellent pain killing mouth wash, that is enormously helpful in healing gums and stopping any oral pain.

Mouthwash 3 or 4 times a day by swishing a mouthful. It stops pain within one minute. I have used it for 40 years to keep my gums and teeth root systems healthy.

IT WAS RATHER FOOLHARDY FOR YOUR DENTIST TO THINK YOU COULD WAIT TILL NOV.2, 2007 FOR THE ROOT CANAL.
THE LEAST SHE SHOULD HAVE DONE IS EXTIRPATION OF THE NERVE, T FINISH THE ROOT CANAL AT A LATER DATE.
CALL HER AND ASK HER ABOUT THIS OR FIND A DENTIST WHO'LL DO THE WORK.
