They are from the continent of North America.
America is a shortened form of United States Of America used by the world when referring to us
Just like the world calls those from Estados Unidos Mexicanos - Mexicans

And under your silly rules... you're very neglectful of the Panamanians and Argentinians ...They would be Americans too

North America. There is no continent 'America' as we are taught it. (I understand some kids are taught that Oceana is a continent and that North and South America are a single continent called America, but most of the world isn't taught that.)

Regardless, we aren't the slightest confused between territories, and if they want to call themselves Americans and mean they are South Americans, and stick to their civil rights in South America, that is fine by me. Regardless of the name, they are not citizens of this country.

It has internationally been know for a long time that if you are from the United States of America...you are considered American. It has nothing to do with continents and has never been brought into question until people went above and beyond being politically correct and we started protesting all of the illegal immigrants coming here....
On this side of the ocean, people have never named themselves by their continent..only country.

All people in Mexico and Canada are Mexicans, Canadians and North Americans.

I live in the U.S., therefore I consider myself an American as
well as a North American.

To most in the world, people from the U.S. are called Americans. Ask them why they don't consider people from Mexico and Canada Americans.

All persons from North, Central and South America are Americans. The customary use of the single word American has degraded to normal usage to only apply to the United States of America citizens.

I had a conversation about this- once; & I must admit, they had me Stumped! I guess the fact IS, we're all "North Americans"- While you can call the Countries south of Mexico, "Central" or "South Americans". It really ISN'T accurate to call just the people from the U.S.- Americans, afterall.

So why can't other people use this term? I've wondered this myself. I am an American also even though I was not born in the United States.

If you go to Europe, Germans can say their European, people from Poland are European.

If you go to Korea they can say they are Asian, Chinese can say they are Asian.

If your from Ethiopia you can say your African, if your from Sudan you can say your African.

There's a city in Argentina called America. So those people are Americans.

What you are using is pure symantecs, which have no basis in this argument whatsoever.

"American" is a commonly accepted slang term for a citizen of the US. Everybody knows this.
