Seems to be the implication of all these "y'ain't-so-perfect y'self" types. That since everybody - not just type-L illegals - breaks laws, then we're all guilty. Nobody really cares about laws, so, why not just toss the whole concept?

In consideration, as you answer, imagine for a moment that all N. & S. American nations except Canada, the United States and Costa Rica had developed a legal system like those three.

Then, this whole site would be in Spanish with countless Hondurans, Salvadorans, Mexicans, etc, all furious about those Anglo invaders having 4.5 babies, refusing to speak the language and using up "our" social security.

Yea or Nay?

Thomas M: Again (#3) thumbs up. My respect is well-placed, as I'm brutal in my discrimination of to whom I extend it. Yet again, though, the bases of your logic are likely to find you run afoul. Excellent adherence to and choice of words concerning what you base your answers on. But - and imagine that I and my insistence never existed - if your assumptions prove false, how will you restructure your position?

The laws we have are repeatedly broken because a) a mutually beneficial relationship exists that should be allowed, or b) a surging population - unaware of their disproportionate numbers - is desperate and will face starvation IF no affordable substitute for cheap oil is found, produced and distributed in time. THX. You're alright, TM ~!

I see your point. Rule of law, meaning having a genuine understanding about how and when the law will be applied, is essential to a free society - perhaps even more than democracy.

I think there's a second point to be considered, though. When there is a law which is routinely disobeyed, one needs to consider whether it should be repealed, and include in that thought process a pragmatic consideration of the fact that the law will continue to be broken. One must weigh the harmful effects of repealing the law against the harmful effects of the kind of crackdown that would be needed to enforce it.

Finally, I think you should add Chile to the list of countries that have an effective, non-corrupt government. Transparency Now rates them very close to the USA. You can say an awful lot of bad things about how he did it, but Pinochet did stamp out petty corruption in Chile during his reign.

Almost ALL laws are "routinely disobeyed" in this country and in others. We have laws so people know what they are NOT supposed to do.

You do NOT repeal laws because they are broken. What school of logic did you graduate from??

ALL countries have immigration laws. ALL countries enforce them. Period.

This IS a fact of life. Like it or not.

WE (the United States) welcome more LEGAL immigrants than any other country on EARTH.

PRAY TELL, what "law" would you suggest be repealed???????????????????

And, why should the UNITED STATES be the one to do it?

Sure, lets just dump all of the laws and we can form armed gangs who dispense justice at their own whim. Sounds great! Where are my Mad Max movies?

Had we implemented our own laws all along we wouldnt be in this situation. We GAVE them benefits and welfare, why wouldnt they come if they knew they could get all this, now we're gonna cry that theyre wasting away all our resources that we gave them. Its like if youre a drug dealer and you get someone all hooked and addicted to your drugs then all of a sudden you want to take it away because youre running out.
