i have been saying 'companeras de cuarto.' (they are all girls). is this correct? i would like to be able to distinguish between my roommate that i actually share a bedroom with, and my other apartment-mates.

yes "compañeras de cuarto" means roommates.
Estamos compartiendo el depa. We are sharing an apartment.
I live with 3(4,5) girls. Vivo con 3 chicas.
There is not really a word such as roommate. We just say we are living together, or sharing an apartment or something.
But when we refer to roommate, yes, that is pretty much it. compañera(o) de cuarto.

If they were boys you would say "Companeros de cuarto" but yeah you are about right. That means "company of the room" so yeah you are right.

I would say companeras del cuarto (companeras has a tilde)

"Compañeras DE cuarto" is correct!.
"Compañeras de habitación" is also correct.
"Compañeros(as) de apartamento" would be your 'apartment-mates'.
