My cat too was also around that weight once! Do you only have one cat? If so you should definately consider getting another cat so he has someone to play with, that alone should help him lose weight. Get a younger cat, so they can getting your cat going. I also started feeding him Natural Balance, you can get the diet kind if you'd like, but again, just like in people, exercise is the most important. Does he have the option to eat all he wants? Start only feeding him certain times of the day, if he has an all you can eat buffet....well, he's gonna eat all he can...all day... and just lay there. If he is an only cat, he's probably eating out of boredom. I had 2 cats before and one (the fat one) always wanted to play with my other girl cat, and she never wanted to, so we got him a little brother...AND WHAT DIFFERENCE! All 3 of them have a blast, if you can afford one cat, you can afford 2, not much of a change, as far as money goes. I used to volunteer at a cat shelter, so I have experience with this kinda stuff. I think everyone who has one pet, should have 2. They get lonely, causing them to act up. Can you imagine how bored they get when you're gone, or too busy to play with them.

Don't bother with diet food. It's crap, and is often even unhealthier than regular food. You've got a smart cat.

He's not too fat to exercise. Don't expect him to run on the treadmill, but simply moving will help. If you can increase his movements at all that would be good. If nothing else, make him walk across the room to get a treat or part of his meal. It's especially good to exercise prior to eating - almost mimics their natural behavior of hunting and playing with their food. Even just 30 seconds of additional movement twice per day will help.

But proper diet is going to be the key for weight loss.

In a nutshell, most cats are fat because they've been fed too much (free-feeding or indulging them) and because they're fed dry food which is NOT appropriate food for them due to the grain/carb/sugar content. Cats are obligate carnivores who need to eat a high meat-based protein diet, which is also high in fats and low in carbs.

Many vets, who are sadly ignorant on the topic of proper cat nutrition, will recommend prescription diet foods (usually dry). Cats are expected to lose weight on a starvation diet of 1/4 or 1/3 cup of food per day. Everyone is miserable in these situations.

The solution is to switch the fat cat (and any others in the household as well) to a good quality canned food. Because these foods are species appropriate, the cat will lose weight at a safe, slow pace (no more than 1 pound per month). Switching foods needs to occur slowly, and if you're trying to get a kibble junkie to eat canned food, that will happen naturally.

That's it. Easy as pie. Not only will fat cats lose weight, but it and any others in the home will reap many benefits of eating a speciies appropriate diet.

Hi
This is very easy. Stop feeding kitty crack (dry foods) and feed what a cat needs

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods.
The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Please read about cat nutrition.

Please take time to read the information at the sites Ken and daa have given you.

You can also go to http://www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "The Right Weight Loss Program for Cats."

Quality canned food is the only way to go and do use the good stuff and not the junk from the grocery store.

I would give him some dry food for breakfast and lunch then at dinner find his favorite canned food and let him eat that for dinner. Consult your vet for the best nutritious food :)

Also as the other person said get a toy that is on a string they love that and it is exercise for him and you. :) Good luck hope this helps

here are some ideas...

1. when feeding hima cand of cat food...feed him half a can..
2. when feeding him dry food...give a ltitle less then one cup..
*dry food ish healthier than wet food*
3. never feed the milk...it gives them stomach pains, diarhea, and it can cause some cats to get fat...
4. give yur cat alot of toys, and jingly stuff...that will get them to run around more..
5. supply your cat with plenty of water...
6. let your cat outdoor every now and then if your cat is an indoor cat...instead of using litter boxes...use the lawn...it lets him/her roam the outdoors getting so fresh air and a nice wal or so loonig for a good spot to use the abthroom

actually you will have to do portion control for him. give only a small portion of kibbles in the morning and a small portion at night. I also do not give my cat canned food everyday as it is a "treat" for him
