How can we prevent tics from getting on Otis? He likes to play in the tall weeds...that's probably where he gets them.

Any animal a tick can get on can get lyme. You can try frontline or another, similar product. These help control ticks, fleas and sometimes mosquitos. You should also comb through your dog's hair atleast once a day and check him for ticks. Generally only the very small and hard to see deer ticks carry lyme. Yes, he probably gets them from playing in tall leaves, but you can also pick them up virtually anywhere. My dog had lyme and he wasn't very pleasant. We caught it right away and put him on antibiotics for two weeks. He was back to normal by the 5th day. Some signs to watch for: limping or other pain in joint areas, loss of appetite, listlisness and just not being right.

Yes dogs can get Lyme disease and it isn't uncommon especially in the New England Area. All ticks don't carry Lyme disease. Only the Deer tick is a carrier. There are other disease in various parts of the country that are tick borne..Erlichiosis and Rocky Mountain Fever are but two.
There is a vaccination for Lyme Disease, but it is controversial as to it's effectiveness and other issues.
Lyme disease in dogs is not hard to diagnose. In areas known for a lot of Deer Ticks most vets will routinely recommend that their clients have dogs tested for Lymes.

Using Frontline Plus will go a long way in preventing tick issues with your dog.

Yes they can. If you use flea and tick preventative, that'll help, but he is most likely getting them in the tall weeds. Always check him right after he gets done playing. Take the ticks off with tweezers and burn them in a bowl.

Dogs CAN get lime desease, although it is rare. 90% of all infected dogs never get it but if they do they can easily be treated. I suggest you take "Otis" to the vet and get their advice. As for preventing it, you could ask your vet about that too, also you can look on the internet for more information, but beware you can't trust everything you read online. I think the vet would be your best bet!

Yes, they can! It can be just as misdiagnosed in dogs as it is in humans.
I believe there is a vaccine to prevent it? Not sure tho..

I keep Frontline on my dogs, and (knock on wood) I haven't had any ticks..

A very good friend of mine almost lost her Rottie....it's taken him a year to get completely over it....they almost lost him.
