from my previous sociology & psychology studies, i have heard of churches (mormons particularly) who teach that you can convert a gay person into a straight person. i know that electroshock therapy and intense prayer has been used in the past to "cure" homosexuality. do you think it is possible to convert gays with the power of prayer? if so, is it necessary to do these conversions?

check out my online survey on marriage & relationships at http://geocities.com/sbiv37/ i'd love your input.

Gay cannot be converted. They shouldn't be converted either. Every person has the freedom to do whatever he/she wants with his/hers life (as long as it doesn't intentionally harm others) and being gay does not harm anyone at all in any way.

I sometimes wish there would be a cure for the infection of christianity though.

Different people are tempted by different things.

A person who is tempted to steal can convert and "steal no more." (Ephesians 4:28)

Note he may still from time to time be tempted to steal, but if converted, he has a greater goal so he will no longer give in to that temptation. He will no longer be a practicing thief. Many times the former thief can find satisfaction in living an honest life, and therefore over time he will no longer be tempted to steal.

Some are tempted by homosexuality.

Someone tempted by this can stop practicing this and begin to live another life.

Over time, this person may find satisfaction in living their new life and they may come to a point where they are no longer tempted by it.

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals... and such WERE some of you..." (1 Cor. 6:8-11)

first, let's look at what gay. The best place for any answer you have about any topic is the Bible. Being Gay is a simply perversion. Just like maybe you have an urge to kill someone, but that doesnt give you any right.

Now, about converting. Only God can change your heart. We are saved by Grace through our faith, faith is a gift of God. If they Gay does not repent, he will simply burn in Hell. However, this is not really that harsh being that most people are not going to go to heaven in my estimation.

So, before we feel bad for the lonely Gay guy, let's see how we are to approch resisting this perversion. I believe in the Bible we are told as true Christians to look at the problem as a whole. For instance, do not support Gay shows, or Gay laws, or Gay bars. Even the people who are friendly to Gays, are guilty of sin also.

As far as a true Christian (mormons are not, it's a cult). Yes, the doctrine they tell you when they see you in the first 10 minutes is normal, but after you join, they get into the flying sauser stories, and the stories about black people can not be pastors. (Actually, they were forced to change that, however the book of mormon.

If you know someone who is gay, I would suggest you give them the scriptures, and reason why they need to repend. Don't support that lifestyle in any way, including being a friend to them except if they are looking to change.

Why would you mess wth someone who is not messing with you.
I am not for the gay lifestyle but i still have respect for them as humans and neighbors.
Why would they want to electricute someone for their lifestyle?
Being gay is nothing new, it's just more aware and more acceptable in society today but homosexality has been around for millenia.
No, you should not try to change anyone, if they don't want to change.
Can you electroshock a preist for molesting a young boy?
No, so why the gays?
If Gay is a sin then they will be judged not you.
I say leave them alone.

I have heard of gays who convert on their own. With no assistance from any church of any kind.

I heard that some gays have gone through some life changing event and realize that they do not wish to continue in that lifestyle. And believe it or not, they have never looked back. On Nightline, I believe, someone even wound up finding a woman who did not hold his past against him, married him, they had children together and he is "cured"

No one can convert anyone to anything. Only the Holy Spirit of God can do that.

There are people who said that they were homosexual, who aren't anymore (cured or not, I don't know but they live a heterosexual life).

Yes it is possible for a gay person to turn straight through prayer. My pastor told me about a guy that was gay but turned straight when he accepted Christ as his saviour.

Shock therapy is cruel and noone should resort to such techniques. You can not convert a gay person. A person who is gay can recieve forgiveness and they can choose to live a lifestyle that is honorable to God.

See 1 Cor. 6:9-11

Anybody can be converted from their sin. However it is an act of the Holy Spirit to lead someone to Christ.

I don't think it is possible or necessary to convert them with prayer. Maybe you should instead pray that society will become more accepting of people who are different.
