& i'm sort of in awe right now. Any high IQ'ers out there have comments on what it's like to be around 140. I'm maybe 128 & husband's about the same but our parents were all smarties, does it skip a generation?

Mine's 138 and my son's is high too. He's in the GATE class and he is still bored. I don't know if it skips a generation because we are both intelligent. I wouldn't worry about IQ anyway. It's just another way to judge children. Just encourage your child and keep loving him like you do.

Here's a break down on the IQ tests:

Descriptive Classifications of Intelligence Quotients

IQ Description % of Population
130+ Very superior 2.2%
120-129 Superior 6.7%
110-119 High average 16.1%
90-109 Average 50%
80-89 Low average 16.1%
70-79 Borderline 6.7%
Below 70 Extremely low 2.2%

Hope this helps. If your IQ is 128 you're pretty smart too!

high 120's is nothing to sneeze at, you are smarties too. I'm 137 (which is the lowest in my family, makes me feel like the dummy sometimes, crazy perspective, huh). A gifted program may be a great fit for him. I did not enjoy it much, it seemed like the only perk I got above my peers was extra homework. But if he is looking for the extra challenge then its great. gifted kids tend to get bored and act up in general ed. My husband has an IQ of 166, so our kids are all pretty smart. We have not had any real testing done yet. I don't think intelligence skips a generation, high IQ is a combination of genetics and good early education, so its obvious that you did something right in his first years!!

well I don't want to brag... but my IQ was 143 the last time I took the advanced test. I was home schooled though. and we think that this contributed to it a lot. in the town I live in 90% of the high school Sr.'s cant even read at 3rd grade level, and most can't even subtract 4 from 10 without counting on their fingers. I am very thankful that my parents home schooled me. otherwise I might be as stupid as the rest of the kids my age (in my home town).

I tested around 150 in first grade. The biggest mistake my parents made was to put me ahead a grade and allow me to attend "advanced" classes in lieu of regular ones. In my case, those "advanced" classes amounted to fun and no serious work. What it taught me is that if something were boring or easy, I didn't have to have the discipline to follow through with it.

I went from perfect scores throughout elementary school to nearly failing grades through jr. high & high school. I have suffered from discipline problems my whole life.

In hindsight, some supplemental education and other extra-curicular activities to keep me challenged would have been better.

I don't think it does...I'm 150, my daughter is 160, her father is 160. However iq isn't what counts in real life...it's common sense and how one uses their grey matter that counts.

Another "severely gifted" kid, huh? Keep him thinking. Keep him curious. Make him work at things that can't be accomplished without effort. Love him. Enjoy him.
