I mean I have to take your word for it that the Qur'an is a miracle - but to see the Shiites and the Sunnis and the Sufis and the Kharijites and the Kalamites etc. all disagreeing about the Qur'an's interpretation - it makes me doubt that it is miraculously clear even in Arabic!

I venture to suggest one reason is because the Qur'an needs additional explanations to make it understandable to different generations. Thus, the Hadith. Various theologians expressed their views on what difficult passages meant, practically as well as symbolically, and these views were written down. Of course, the more that is written down, the greater the likelihood of confusion or contradiction.

I think the main reason for different groups forming, however, lay in opposing claims to the leadership of the religion. For example, in 864 a group of Shi'ites, claimants to the inheritance of Zayd, a descendant with a direct link to 'Ali's grandson, established a series of local independent dynasties. Then a second independent Shi'ite state was established in Yemen in 901. In the interval, during Caliph al-Mu'tamid's rule, the 12th Shi'ite imam disappeared in mysterious circumstances, triggering retaliatory acts of terrorism by certainm Shi'ite groups against Sunni institutions. One such act was by the Qarmatians who raided Mecca and carried off the sacred Black Stone from the Ka'ba. This sort of thing has been going on for centuries, and we still see it today in Iraq. It's more to do with power, politics and revenge than anything else.

At the time Muhammad(PBUH) was in this world, there were no sects in Islam...after his departure, different sects came into existence,it's only due to lack of knowledge....
What has sects or interpretation to do with Qur'an as miracle...
Qur'an is a miracle bcoz it is the only book which after about 1400 years is exactly the same as it was 1400 years ago....It has got no versions..There is not a single verse in the Holy Qur'an which goes against established scientifc fact...and many other points make it a miracle....
Okay, sorry!!!i have placed bible aside...still my points remain the same.......

Have you gone through QURAN by yourself?

Could you imagine the scientist knowing about OZONE and its function just less then 100 years but QURAN had mentioned it more then 1400 years ago?

Before our scientist knowing the process in the WOMB, Quran had describe it in very details.

Quran even mentioned a miracle did by Jesus which never mentioned in New Testament. He turn a soil to a live bird which is more amazing rather then rising a dead person.

Quran had discuss about GALAXY, STAR, MOON, SUN and its system 1400 years ago and even about the KILLER ASTEROID before today scientist know about it just recently.

Therefore should among ARAB disagreeing in certain INTERPRETATION of QURAN that is a clear EVIDENT that the knowledge in QURAN is not coming from ARAB and therefore ARAB could not describe all SCIENTIST terminology. Should you could travel to the year 620AC, how you going to tell those people in that particular year about technology that we are having now a days?. How you describe RADIO or TELEVISION? COMPUTER and MOBILE PHONE?

All these shows how Quran is not belong to Arab but to those believer of GOD who really seek the TRUTH.

there is no disagreement on the essence of the Quran.
the greatness of Islam is that the Quran provides the Word.
different sheikhs offer different interpretations of the Word.
as for disagreement between sects, this is like Catholicism and Protestantism in Christianity.it doesnt reduce the miraculous nature of the Word.

In The Quran itself we find admission of such contradictions in that it claims for itself the right of “cancellation” or “abrogation.” Muhammad’s critics had complained that he sometimes contradicted himself, and so he taught that whenever a subsequent revelation contradicted a previous one, the second canceled or abrogated the first. Thus we read, “None of our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten but We substitute something better or the like. Knowest thou not that God hath power for all things?”—Sura 2:106; 16:101, Ali.
It speaks for itself.

Being a miracle doesn't mean it would be interpreted the same by all people. The miracle would be that is exists, not that everyone properly understands it.

But then, why a book would be a "miracle" anyway, I'm not sure.

They all agree the Quran is a miracle.

I have never seen any Muslim disagree that Allah is the one God and Mohammed is the last Prophet.

What can they disagree on ?
