Insurance actually started with shipping- cargo ships.

Back in the day - when ships would travel with cargo - it was common for them to go down (sink). Someone started to underwrite the cargo on the ships. A bill would be posted and the person that would insure the cargo for a fee would write the information under the bill (hence the term Underwriter). Eventually companies were formed. I believe Loyd's of London was one of the first.

You may want to do some Internet searches on the history of insurance or cargo to get better information.
