Laying hens lay an egg a day, regardless of whether there''s a male around or not. Ranches keep the hens separated from the males.

Because they haven't been fertilized. Meaning no male contact. That's why when you get eggs from a local farm that has a rooster running around with the hens you crack the eggs in a bowl to inspect. Eggs in a supermarket are already inspected to ensure the eggs haven't been fertilized.

Most eggs bought at a supermarket are from chickens, kept in individual cages, by themselves. The hens are kept for egg laying, and the roosters are kept separate for slaughter. Therefore, the eggs are not fertile. Get it? No roosters (males) no chicks, the eggs are not fertilized.
