I used to eat shrimp a lot without problem but here in the past year, shrimp and scallops make my throat feel like it is swelling shut. Is this imagined? I stopped seafood for a while but had some crab legs last night without problem. Is a seafood allergy all seafood or could it be limited to shrimp and scallops? Is this all in my head?

This is an important allergy to confirm because it is not the shellfish you are allergic to, it is the iodine that accumulate in the shellfish from their eating habits in the ocean. Iodine is used in many Xray contrast dyes--this is why it's important to figure out. Allergy testing is safer than eating seafood & seeing what happens!

You could be allergic to invertebrates like shellfish (mollusks and crustacea) but not to vertebrates like fish. The important thing is that if you feel like your throat is swelling shut when you eat shrimp and scallops, then you might want to see your health care provider and get evaluated for allergies to shrimp and scallops.

The symptom that you describe may be an early form of allergy and you would not want to wait until you developed a more rapid, severe form.

Take home message: when in doubt, check it out!

Yes, you can develop food allergies that you never had before. I had allergy tests done and am allergic to several vegetables and oysters. I've never liked oysters, so didn't eat them, yet still developed the allergy. I was also told by a nurse to let them know if I go to the Dr or hospital that I have this allergy, due to meds they use.

If you can, get allergy tests to show what your allergies are and what to avoid. The throat swelling can be very serious. It's not all in your head. Good luck!

Yes you can develope an allergy, usually after your body has been exposed several times. It sounds like you may have an allergy to some shellfish but not all. I would suggest keeping liquid benedryl with you, if you feel your throat closing take it and it will help your body recover from an anaphylactic reaction. Fish allergies are the worst because you can have a reaction from other foods that came in contact with the fish. So just in case get the benedryl!!!
