The original City of Hollywood was incorporated on November 9, 1903 and subsequently merged by consolidation with the City of Los Angeles on February 7, 1910. Since that time it has been a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles, although a City of Los Angeles council seat district (ward) approximates the old original city boundaries. It has had an unofficial "mayor" from time to time, usually a media/entertainment personality with absolutely no official authority. People sometimes get confused because they confuse Los Angeles County with the City of Los Angeles. Los Angeles (the county) is huge and currently contains 88 real cities (of which Hollywood is not one, remember it merged in 1910). The county also contains numerous well known neighborhoods such as Hollywood, Venice, San Pedro, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Bel-Air, Watts, Eagle Rock. Hollywood is a city that is altogether a part of Los Angeles County. However, only portions of Hollywood are officially part of the "City of Los Angeles". West Hollywood is independent from the City of L.A. but is still part of L.A. County (like Beverly Hills, Malibu, etc.).
