My lab is a great girl....she just barks a lot! We are moving to an apartment for the first time, and I want to make sure she doesn't bother our neighbors. Any suggestions?

Dogs bark for a lot of reasons, some times just to hear themselves!

When she barks, let her bark 2 or 3 times (so she understands not all barking is bad). Then give her a "quiet" command. The next time she barks, tell her "no - quiet". At this same time, give her a slight tug on the collar to distract her and get her attention. As soon as she is quiet, pet her calmly in her favorite spot (usually around the ears) and tell her in a calm voice "good quiet". This will reinforce she's good and you're happy, as well as reinforce what "quiet" means. It may seem in the beginning that you are simply say no then good girl then no then good girl etc. It will take a little time, but she should learn the word quiet.

If she is not responding to the word "no" or the collar tug, there are 2 other options you have -
A squirt gun. Give her the command quiet, if she responds, praise, if she does not, squirt her at the back of the head with the water. This will distract her so she will typically stop barking, at least long enough for you to praise her. BE CAREFUL, however, as labs are water dogs and she may find this option a fun time, and will bark just to get the water. Try it once or twice and watch her reaction. If it has the right affect, i.e., she stops barking, praise her. If she decides it's fun, then don't use it.
The second option is an empty soda or beer can, rinsed out and has a handful of pennies or pebbles in it. Tape over the opening so they can't fall out. Just like the water, give her the quiet command first and allow her to get it right. If she continues barking, throw the can towards her, but not to where it can hit her. The motion and the noise will cause her to stop barking, so you can praise her.

Any time she is quiet, just sitting or laying down, in a very soft, quiet voice, tell her "good quiet". This is let her know you're happy with her, and reinforce what "quiet" means.

First let me say i am probably going to get some thumbs down but i am just giving MY opinions.

1. They do have "spray" Anti bark collars that contain Citronella that sprays out every time a dog barks. It does NOT cause the dog pain its even safe to use around children it just causes a SMALL dis comfort. Here is a website that i found that you can order one for cheap and learn more about it

2.A SOUND anti bark collar what this does its lets out a LOUND beeping noise that can become annoying at some times but it does bother the dogs ears.
Here is also a website

3. Last but not least the "shock collar" Most people find this inhumane but some people believe they work. I have tried this collar and it does work rather well. It has warning signs and it has differ levels

Have you tried a bark collar? One of my friends usees it on her pappilion, it senses controled barking, and uncrotroled. It gives a little shock when it senses the uncontroled, but it wont hurt the dog.

Well need to learn under what conditions she barks. Like if she needs to go potty or is hungry.

That's odd that she barks. Maybe you need to spend more time with her. She is trying to attract attention for a reason.
