I know this has been asked before, but I have some additional information that may need to have some answers justified.

First of all, I am wondering if I can cancel my phone service and use the AT&T DSL (same provider for phone and Internet) without the phone service? I do not trust with the company says because I believe they are just trying to keep me a customer and get my money for services I hardly use.

I want to cancel my phone service and get VOIP instead, since it's pratically cheaper that the phone service regularly.

BTW, currently, we have an unpaid account and it's disconnected with the typical busy signal on the line and my DSL service still works, nevertheless.

All I can hope if I do cancel it is that they don't come down here and completely disconnect the line from the system.. :/

Thanks!

This system is located in Southwest Louisiana.
Phone company is AT&T, which currently owns the line.

No, you don't need a phone line. DSL is different from a phone line....! what you need is a provider for a dry(naked) DSL line.......and after that, get a good VoIP provider!

Verizon has a dry DSL line service, and ATT too, but they try to keep it a secret....(since the lawsuit)....you only can apply on line for this service. You could call ATT and have them help you walk they there website, but that all they will do for you!

the Att DSL special 10 dollars a month line, is only for new customers!

Its sort of in transition now. Some companies are, including some AT&T locations. Others don't.

You can call and ask if they offer "naked DSL." That's the term.

By the way, I think VOIP is a rip-off, unless you are a very heavy phone user. Most plans are like $39 or more for unlimited calling. My traditional phone plan is $17 per month including all the junk fees and taxes, and my long distance is 4 cents a minute with no minimum fees or usage requirements. Bottom line, my monthly phone bill is regularly under $20. You just gotta avoid all the crap like call waiting, voice mail, caller id, etc.

Yes. You must have a landline in order to have DSL. However, you may be able to reduce your basic phone bill by quite a bit by not paying for services you don't use ... call waiting, caller ID, long distance, linebacker, etc.

You may be able to get alternative internet ... i.e., cable or satellite or wireless, then you can write the phone company out of your life.

I hope you can read this answer before they remember to turn off your DSL.

Yes you have to have a phone line for it to go through. I switched my services to another company and pay 23 a month now for unlimited calling etc. If you'd like their web site, email me and I'll be happy to send it to you. VOIP is a good service to have. Some states allow it to be together where you think it's not a landline, but in reality it is.

I don't they will come and disconnect the line. They don't need to do that. I do think they will eventually turn off your DSL if you don't make arrangements to pay your bill.

You maybe able to get "naked DSL" . Follow the link in the below article to see if it's available in your area.

I believe it depends on the state. In Nebraska, I know you have to have phone service, but I also know that in S. Dakota you don't.
