I'm 18 years old and I live in California. Four HOURS ago, I tried applying for car insurance and they told me it would cost 300 dollars because I had a point from court 2 years ago! I was shocked and remembered the only violation I did was jaywalking! It wasn't even a real jaywalk, I just walked in the pedestrian crosswalk when the hand was red. I was 15 and a half back then too! They say it would still count for another year because I didn't take driving school for it! Driving school? I was 15 and it had nothing to do with driving! I talked to the dmv and they said they couldn't do anything about it. My question is, do you guys know an insurance company that would be reasonable and give me a fair deal even with this problem? Please tell me where I can find one because I really need to drive to work and I can't pay 300 dollars...Thanks a lot!

Insurance companies work with actuaries and statistical information to determine your rate. Statistically you are an at risk driver because of the point. I understand that common sense would laugh in the face of what you are dealing with, but my only suggestion is to continue shopping around until you find someone who is willing to take a chance on you. Go to a private insurance broker who has access to numerous companies and see what they can do for you.

Some companies are better for high risk drivers. You may want to try Progressive. Also - try an insurance broker (instead of a captive agent).

An independent agent or broker - sells insurance for many companies - not just one (like - Allstate or State Farm). So the independent agent should be able to check with all of the companies they write for and may be able to get you a better rate.

Good Luck.

WOW I have never heard of a NON moving violation causing problems on your insurance. evidently california has different rules. In georgia that wouldnt even come up on your motor vehicle record(M.V.R.) Try another company. I would call around and ask if that is standard or just a rule of that insurance company. Try a good reputable company like state farm or liberty mutual stay away from gieco or progressive.

Dude, stay off the damn computer and go see an agent IN PERSON. Then again -- how much do you really expect to PAY at 17?? Is this for only one month, three, six? Three hundred bucks may not be too far off the mark for your age -- and we don't know if you are trying to insure a Mustang GT or Corvette, etc.

I don't see how legally they can use something you did as a child against you, now that you are an adult. You need some legal advice, not some insurance advice. You should contact the ACLU and ask them how it is possible that you got a point against you name as a child that is still hurting you now.
