I don't really know, and I'm not sure anyone does outside of his inner circle; however, I will still venture several theories which I have deemed probable, and I will attempt to do so in an impartial manner.

1) He has a severe inferiority complex. He attempted to "outdo" pop and take down Iraq, something which 41 was never able to accomplish. Also, he wanted to stand out as a president, which he has done, although not in the manner which he originally intended.

2) He is not, in fact, acting independently, but Cheney, big business and co. are using him as a puppet. Security contractors have benefited immensely from this war, with hundreds of billions of dollars of contracts so far.

3) He actually thought that he would be bettering the U.S., Iraq and the rest of the world with the invasion, this, by most standards, is not the case.

Methinks he would not admit to the first two, as they would make him and his allies look bad, so the third, which he seems to be at least pretending was his mission is really his only option.

Also, no, he did not "invade Iraq for oil." Even overlooking the fact that the phrase does not make sense, if oil was indeed a motive, then one would be strongly motivated to think that their would be at least some oil-related success, which has not occured.

So, those are my three theories, I hope they were able to assist you in answering this question.

Because (1) Iraq persistently violated the rules imposed pursuant to Desert Storm; (2) Because Iraq sponsored terrorism (e.g., paying $25K to Palestinian suicide-bomber families) and (3) Like Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, et al, he felt it was time for regime change and wanted to prevent Saddam Hussein from inflicting weapons of mass destruction either on his own people (vis-a-vis the Kurds) or others in the middle east or elsewhere.

Don't think he ever wanted to invade Iraq.
Just blunders and slip-ups with human errors with communication problems with misinterpretation, miscommunication, communication failures and communication break-down.
The mess was created by children messing up with science and mathematics in playing computer games getting hit by Jack-in-the-box.
No one expect the reality and horrors of Mr. Big Brother of artificial intelligence kicking the butts of living human kind that became a nightmares that got everyone at loss and blurr on what went wrong out there.
Orson Wells warned us about it.
Thought it could never happen.
But it did.
After the war was over.
Something extra ordinary creeps out from the graveyards.
Caught again with the second round with Iraq as living examples.
That got everyone at loss and blurr on what went wrong until the children out there expose they too were at loss and blurr on what were they doing out there.
After the second round caught again with the third one in messing up "The king and I"
Only after the Asian Tsunami.
Realised something went wrong out there.
After getting kick on the butts.
Realised it was blunders and slip-ups with human errors created back in the past being expose in time in the new millenium after the mystery of us-911.
Luke 10.24
That explained why no one can leave classes only after the home-work on the correction has been done.
That leads us back to world war two on the loss of "The spoils of the war" with our creator's universal gifts of life.
Joshua 7.11
Luke 24.44-45,47-49

He thought it would be a quick way to show America's power, get in and get the "job" over with quickly, get out. He likes to talk tough, and figured this would help his image. Kind of backfired on his butt, huh?

Oil (would give him money) and Globalization AKA The NEW WORLD ORDER; would give him power. Lots and lots and lots of power. More power than hitler and stalin combined.

To give all the useless wankers in the world something to whine and pule about.

We're in a "war on terror". Which is very stupid, because bombing innocent civilians won't stop terror. "oh yup. my house got blown up. Im MUCHHH less terrified now."

Bombing for peace is like f***ing for virginity
