my condition? I am paraplegic, and I have never been able to walk. My Dad told me that I was being punished. Did I do something bad before I was born, or is/was I being punished for something I will do in the future?

Posts like this serve to remind me that I wasn't the only one with a seriously misguided father.

Since I don’t know the whole story concerning you, your dad, and your family, it’s difficult to know why you are paraplegic. But one thing is for sure: you are not being punished if you were born that way. There are 2 possible reasons for the cause. (1) Someone in your family did something wrong, and you’re affected as a consequence. (2) No one in your family sinned, and your condition is something that will eventually reveal God’s goodness by healing you (please read the story of the man born blind and healed at John 9). Everyone is born dysfunctional in some way, some more noticeably than others. But we all have an equal chance to live well because Jesus suffered and died on our behalf. There are people who were healed of down-syndrome, had limbs grown where they were born without arms, and more.

Wow...You're not being punished. That's some old school puritan thought. I'm probably not the person to tell you where God fits into your life, but you have to figure out what is right for you, and what you think about everything. The God I believe in wouldn't do that to you out of punishment, but he can give you the resources and the will and the ability to still do great things with your life.

Don't you believe it!
I know a young lady who has been totally paralyzed since birth...I have forgotten the name of her birth defect, but she has lived her entire life in a chair designed to react to simple finger taps. She has to be fed, changed, bathed, dressed...all of her physical needs have to be tended to by others. Her mind works fine, in fact, she is quite intelligent. There is nothing at all wrong with her voice, either. She is able to communicate, and her computer is programmed with voice-activated software, which is pretty cool.
She has a wonderful family, who have devoted themselves to seeing to it that she is always well-cared for.

Now, you'd think this girl would be bitter, and angry that God allowed her to be born in this condition. She will be totally helpless for her entire life. Alot of folks would be full of rage and hatred for God and for the world, don't you think?
But not this particular young lady.
She has made the very best of what she has...and what she has is an absolutely beautiful voice. She composes her own music, by the way.
Oh, she is not very well known, outside of her own little territory. Although she has received repeated invitations to appear on this or that religious television program, she has always declined. Fame and fortune are not her goal.
But where ever she does go, she brings joy, and inspiration, and new hope to everyone who hears her.
God may not have allowed her to walk...but He has given her wings to fly with.

Your father may be feeling some guilt that you were born the way you are. Perhaps he thinks that something he or your Mom did, or didn't do, caused you to be born as you are.
It is hard, to have a disabled or ill child...
May God bless you, Hun...
May He also touch your father's heart, and bless him.
And may you, also, find your wings.

Your father is confused, you are not being punished, what your father meant is that you have inherited this unfortunate condition through sin. It has nothing to do with you as an individual. We are all sinners, for this reason birth defects and horiffying diseases exist. Bad things happen to good people all the time. It has nothing to do with what kind of person you are.

Forgive your Dad because he only said what he was taught. There is no punishment, and stop looking at your affliction as a punishment but as a blessing. Read into Buddhist texts and find truth!

your dad has no right to say that to you, the way you are is the way you are and you are not punished for anything you did or haven't done yet.

There was a man like in your condition who had immense power and much respect, so don't let your condition slow you down in life, give 110% and success will follow

I don't know why anyone would say that to you. I don't think that anyone really knows the answer as to why things like your condition happen. I believe that we are here to learn by experience. perhaps your experience is your lesson in this life.
Don't allow yourself to get depressed over things people say to you. You know that you are not to blame. Much Love to You Sweet heart. You can make a difference in your's and other's lives.

As salaamu 'alaikym, my friend.

Insha'Allah, you have not done anything wrong nor are you being punished by Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala.

As a Muslim, I believe that everything that happens in this life is the Will of Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala and that as such, everything serves His divine purpose.

I would ask, what have you personally learned by living with you current condition? How has it affected your view of life and others? How can you use what you have learned so as to help others to understand you and others who may be in similar or worse conditions?

We are taught in the Holy Qur'an that Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala never burdons us with more than we can bear.

Insha'Allah, I will keep you in my prayers, my friend.

Ma'a salaam.

No you didn't do anything bad, God does everything for a reason. But maybe if God chose you to be paraplegic was to show others you are a strong person.

He may feel guilty (many parents do when something goes wrong, even if it's not their fault).
Some people transfer such feleings of guilt/helplessness to an easy scaegoat like a devil; it's easier to blame someone/something else than to accept the hardships of life for what they are.
