In some jurisdictions the choice of sidearm is left to the individual as long as it meets minimum calibre specifications. Both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols have their specific advantages. Revolvers are more reliable, but are usually limited to 5 or s6 shots. Semi-automatic pistols can stove-pipe, or jam, in action, but can hold 9 shots or more and are considered faster shooting. As with any skill, practice makes perfect.
So yes, some policemen do carry revolvers rather than (semi-automatic) pistols.

Some smaller departments do i my area use revolvers, especially some of the older officers.

There is a couple reasons why you don't see them much.

First of all is malfunctions. Revolvers do not malfunction as much as semi autos, but when they do, you usually need tools to fix it. Most semi auto malfunctions can be cleared quickly, without tools.

The second issue is capacity. A revolver has 6 rounds. You were taught to save two in case you are charged. That basically gives you 4 shots before you reload. Even if you carry two speed loaders, you only have 18 rounds. Semi autos can carry up to 18 rounds in one magazine, without reloading.

Yes , some police officers are die hard revolvers fans, and got permission to carry them in lieu of their official sidearm.
