It can be really hard to tell. It takes someone with a lot of experience with cats, and then even they can be wrong. Teeth condition is a good indicator.

Your vet can make a GUESS. It can be off by a lot depending on the condition of the cat. For instance, vets estimated the age of my sister's cat at 7 years old (she was actually 13, she was born in my closet). However, if the cat is elderly, most of the time there is a clear indication (reduced collagen, teeth condition, etc.).

Usually when if you take them to the vet and ask, they will try to tell you based on the condition of the cats teeth.
