We've been thinking about looking into getting a Carer/Home Help because we are both registered disabled and are finding certain things very difficult to do at the moment. does anyone get this sort of help and what can they do or aren't allowed to do? Also, how much does it cost? We're on some benefits...DLA, Industrial Injuries and Income Support. Honest answers please. Thanks in advance. xx

Why are the answers getting thumbs down? Shame on you, whoever you are! The people who have answered are very kind and deserve your respect, each and every one of them! Omg.....who do we give the 10 points to? If you aren't the one we choose we're sorry but can't give it to all of you...wish we could. Thank you. xx

I work as a carer in a nursing home for elderly people. I have just finished a 12 month contract as a support worker in a home for elderly people with dementia and Alzheimers. I am immensely concerned, caring, and very particular about the type of care each 'client group' needs, so please tell me a bit more. I am based in SE England. I worked for 12 years as an unpaid carer (I had a full time job doing something else) looking after my mother (died of cancer), my great aunt (died of old age) and my gran (died of old age at 95). I am now trying to work (as I said) full time with elderly people, but I am also looking after my best friend who has AIDS, and my daughter who is autistic. Life is not easy, but I have a wealth of experience, so I will try to help.

You could go to social services, but you will find that there are only certain things that home-helps are allowed to do and their time is limited Also you may not get the same person each time..Do you know anyone who has private help? Ask around and chose someone by recommendation is the best way to go.

I'm the owner of a Senior Care Service. We send out caregivers to seniors homes to do housekeeping, laundry, cooking, etc., some personal care as well. Unfortunately, most of these services are private pay. Some long term care insurances will cover these services as well. The cost depends on the area you live in and the hours you need help. In my company, I try very hard to keep cost low and have hourly, short term daily as well as monthly rates. You may want to give the area wide agency on aging a call to see what resources are available in your area. Good Luck.

Have you tried Social Services....they have their own carers and home helps.....Also if you look up your phone book you may find listings for various care agencies....also check the job adverts, as some care agencies can be found in there when looking for staff. Just generally ask around and choose a firm that is right for you and fits into the criteria you require.
