Lol, I guess it's just a referance to people seeing more smiley faces on pumpkins than on apples or tomatos. Perhaps it just is that when some people think pumkin, they think holloween, then sweets, then smiles...I dunno. Can be other reasons.

Guys call girls "tomatoes". "Lollipop" is used, though it isn't a fruit it is fruity flavoured.

Old people sometimes call each other "prune".
