This contradiction of God's nature and the world we experience has always been my main reason for rejecting the christian God. I am wondering if anyone here can provide a new expanation for me.
Here is an essay by Sam Harris which explains the problem well:
"Of course, people of faith regularly assure one another that God is not responsible for human suffering. But how else can we understand the claim that God is both omniscient and omnipotent? There is no other way, and it is time for sane human beings to own up to this. This is the age-old problem of theodicy, of course, and we should consider it solved. If God exists, either he can do nothing to stop the most egregious calamities or he does not care to. God, therefore, is either impotent or evil. Pious readers will now execute the following pirouette: God cannot be judged by merely human standards of morality. But, of course, human standards of morality are precisely what the faithful use to establish God’s goodness"

JC, I know these this problem did not originate from Sam Harris, thats why he says the "age-old problem of theodicy", he is merely describing it well

Quiet, that is an interesting concept, but I am told that God frequently intervenes in human lives. Miracles, natural disasters, and other events are said to be proof of his existence, or even as direct retribution for things we have done, so I do not see how your analogy fits this scenario

whoever Sam Harris is , he didnt convince me. But I offer this to everyone: what is the point in trying to convince one side or the other about the existence or non-existence of an all powerful, all knowing diety commonly referred to as God? There is nothing useful to be gained by doing this. You believe what you want and I will do the same. I believe in God but guess what? I dont give a rat's *** if you do or not. There is too much going on in the world to fight, argue and sometimes actually kill for our beliefs. If you believe-fine, if not thats ok too. I will convince nobody that God exists and no one will convince me that He does not exist. I have said it before--if we believers are right then the non believers will find out. If the non believers are right then we will never know. If there is nothing beyond death then how could that be proved ?
if we believers are right then I am sure the LOrd will sooner or later offer firsthand living proof. Until that day just try to be a little nicer to each other and get on with the business of living by what you hold to be just and true within yourself.

The argument is not so much evidence for God's non-existence, but begs the question that given the reality of suffering, should God, if God exists, be given honor or worship? God could well exist, and as your friend Sam Harris notes, simply be indifferent to human suffering. Aristotle postulated as much. I would recommend you examine Thomas Aquinas in regards to the question of the relationship of God's nature to the predicament of human suffering and the mystery of evil. He is a lucid writer, and considers the many of the objections that you have noted and more. He also provides answers to those objections.

There is no way my mind will ever be able to comprehend why God does something or why He does not. However, my misunderstanding does not lead me to conclude there is no God.
God himself says that he is a jealous vengeful God. He demands obedience. From the beginning he said that man will have to work, and will lived on a cursed land. (that is being faithful to his word)
Because he doesn't always jump in and say "Behold I am God, Let me make your life perfect in your view," does not mean he is not omniscient, omnipotent, or benevolent. How do we not know that a great tragedy would not be good for us in the long run? God promises he will stop all pain and suffering, but he's not going to do it just because I think he should right now, because I am not omniscient.
God constantly finds favor in certain people and blesses them accordingly, but would you consider Job's life a blessing? I would.
I have told my daughter several times. Do not touch the burner. After stopping her 50+ times from touching it, I finally let her learn for herself. She touched it, felt the heat, Cried to me for comfort (i did) and has never touched it since. God does the same. He lets us learn for ourselves. And then waits for us to turn to him when we need comforting...

These thoughts did not originate with Sam Harris.
That is not proof or evidence that the Christian God doesn't exist. That is a fundamental misunderstanding of suffering and God's character.

I'll give you a spin on how G_D knows all using items we can understand.
You and your wife have a son, day he is born you jump in a time machine. On each of his birthdays you pop in. You do this over n over all through his life but its just seconds or minutes to you. You then see your son die on his 87th birthday.
Now you set the machine back to your time, you appear and see your wife still holding your brand new son. You state " I am the Alpha and the Omega of our son, for I have seen him born, seen him grow, know all he does and I've seen him die. "
But did you ever bother his life? no. Same with G_D.
edit: easy... say you are in the machine and you see your son almost in an accident, so you do something to alter it so it doesn't happen. same with storms, G_D interacting, etc. I was trying to explain it in very simple terms.

Wow, it is like a circular definition of sorts...
It seems that God exists on our own terms, not His.
