I am a caricature artist. I met a balloon guy at a function I was working at he offered to hook me up with some work.
I got a call from some woman who represents him today offering me a caricature job for Saturday. I told him work for $75 / hr (which is actually pretty cheap for someone with over 10 years exp. but I already have a full time job and I like doing caricatures so I don't mind.)

Anyway, they want me to collect $135 from the client and mail them the entire amount and THEN they will mail me a check.

I don't mind if someone takes 20% for hooking me up with work but 45% is really a lot for making a few phone calls.
Also, I've been screwed by balloon people/magicians in the past and I'm skeptical about trusting them to send me a check.

How would YOU guys handle this?

Normal agents make 20% not 45%

i don't like that they will be paying you after and you have to collect. i wouldn't do it but that's because i don't trust most people. good luck :)

What is the point in mailing them the entire amount. You take your cut of it and then they get theirs.

I wouldnt bother. There are too many people out to make a buck and screw people over while doing it...

If you are the honest one, step up and say that you will have to pass on this one. If you are as good as you say you are, you will have no problems, dont get involved in something when you have questions about it before you even begin.

That is a RED FLAG ALERT!!!!

Just tell them your terms and conditions. If you want $75/hour and you only want to pay them a 20% finder's fee, then stick to it. If they really want you, then they'll agree to it. If not, then it's not worth your time
Also, if the client is giving you money directly, then why would you need to send the whole amount to the middle man. Just keep it all or send them the percentage you think they deserve.

Take the $75. You would not have had the job if they did not hook you up.

And it is more then a few phone calls. The lady makes her living booking jobs. If she books 5 jobs on Sat and 5 on Sun that is $600 for the whole week (not many baloon and character gigs on the weekdays). $600 less all her expenses (taxes, payroll (?), phone, electric, office space (?), insurance).

Take it.

Me ?
I would NEVER send them the total .
If I collect , I would keep my portion , then send them theirs .
Now you did say your fee was $75 and $135 minus $75 is actually $60 ,
So your post is confusing .
None the less ,
WHY would I cycle my $$$ through them ?
Only a total sucker would fall for that one .

I would under no circumstances mail them the check. If anything, I would collect the money, make sure the check clears, then you mail them their cut and call it a day.
It sounds like you could end up with nothing for all your hard work.
Hope this helps.

I would send them a check for 20% of whatever you make. If they don't like it, they dont have to hook you up with work anymore. Like you said, you dont need it, you have a job.

you should tell her youll only do it if you get two separate checks from the client or they pay you in advance and make a contract with her so that way they can feel comfort...or just make a contract all together...verbal agreements never hold up in court

It sounds like a scam to me. If you have a full time job I would tell the guy that he can find some moron to accept his offer because it isn't you.
