While I don't usually condone lying, this is a case where it's really best to lie. If you're at someone's party and you don't want to eat the greasy, carb-y hors d'oeurves because they're not healthy enough, it will come off as rude to the hosts, even though there's nothing rude about it.
For family and close friends, you'll be able to tell the truth and they'll understand. As far as coworkers/other friends/acquaintances/neighbors, etc., pretend you have developed a wheat gluten allergy.
I know that's not being honest, but that's what I started saying when I stopped eating most simple carbs. It's a lot less hurtful and offensive to people you're eating with, or who are giving you food gifts.
The gluten allergy wipes out virtually all crackers, cakes, buns, rolls, breads, pies, pastas, pastries, muffins, etc... Basically, anything that contains flour is off limits (and this is a lot).
If you must eat fast food with your friends, you could get a salad.

A lot of the fast food places are now featuring things that arent too hard on a diet. Go online and find some of the places your friends frequent and have something in mind when you know where they're headed. If it's some place that doesnt have anything you'd ever consider eating, try one of their salads, but ask for the dressing on the side. You could also try carrying one of those meals in a bar and say you just dont have much of an appetite right then. Order a water and you'll be eating with them but not like them. I know how hard it is to be around people who either dont have to worry about what they eat or ones who just dont care. It's your body and your weight. It really wouldnt be rude if you said you were just trying to fit into a new dress for the holidays. Good luck with this.

Just a simple no thank you or I'm trying to eat healthier will work. A lot of fast food places serve salads. Holiday time doesn't have to be a weight gainer. You can still eat healthy. Maybe turkey breast, veggies, a little sweet potatoes and even an oatmeal cookie (if you feel the need to have a little cheat). People are more aware of eating healthy these days so I don't think you would come across rude. Also, deli meats aren't very "healthy". They are usually loaded with sodium. Be careful of them and don't indulge that much with them.

Mike,
I had the same problem when I stopped eating fast food. At first my friends thought it was pretty weird and was a passing phase. When we would be out and stop for food at Taco Bell or wherever, I'd pass and say " I'm just watchin what I eat, go ahead". Now I've been without fast food for about 15 years, my friends know I don't eat it and they wish they didn't either. So, for a short answer, just tell them your trying to eat healthier or watching what you eat. It will be odd at first but they will get use to it

The only way it is "rude" to turn down food is if you say something to make the other person feel bad about eating it. Just politely decline.. Be proud that you are eating healthy and maybe share your ideas with your friends... and bring a healthy dish to the holiday gathering!

There is nothing wrong with saying, "No thank you, but I'm trying to make healthier choices about what I eat." If you can muster the willpower, you can socialize with your friends at fast food places and order salads and low-fat foods. There are "upscale" fast food places like Baja Fresh, Noodles & Co., and even Subway where there are a lot of relatively healthful alternatives. Hang in there!

"I'd love to go along for the company, but I'm really not interested in that type of food, thanks."
Said politely, this should not seem rude, I would think.
BTW, I hope that you are sticking to the "all natural" deli meats, since the sodium and preservatives in many of those are not all that healthy!

Most every place has something on the menu that you can eat. If not, then don't join them for meals. Or eat before you go and just enjoy a cocktail.

You can do that by telling them you are not in the mood or you are not hungry. For the most of it tell them the truth and try to help them change their habits into good ones as well.

I wouldn't think you were being rude if you just told me straight up that you don't care for fast food and prefer a healthier meal.
