Balance. Consider how color and shape affect the "feeling" of how your composition is balanced. Where do you want the emphasis placed? That would likely be the central point of your composition, or the balance point. Keep your bright colors near the point of emphasis and keep your sharper angles directed toward your balance point. Soften the areas you want more discretely seen by rounding something and blending to a softer color.

One way to learn about still life is to look. Take fruit... I know, okay, take three pieces of nicely shaped fruit and just look at them. See how the light plays off the shape and affects the color and directs the eye to the balance point. Then move your fruit until you can "feel" the balance point where you think it is comfortable for the elements you have to work with.

Good luck. It isn't easy.

Well, there are all kinds of rules and considerations with visual composition. But, just as a musical or literary composition, you want to put together an interesting arrangement of all the elements and principals of art. So, what is interesting? Something new or unexpected. Something that will surprise the viewer. Start by asking yourself, what are the variables you can control? You can control things like: light, pattern, texture, movement, rhythm, color, etc. Now, put it together in a clever way.
