So I was leaving work yesterday and around the corner came this, GORGEOUS blue and white pitbull, and scared the living bajeesus out of me. He had no collar, but was neutered. Anyways, I knelt down to pet his cute little buns, and he was giving me kisses and what not, anyways, long story short... I really thought about picking him up and taking him home with me cuz he was SO damn gorgeous, but I knew someone was probably missing him. Later on that evening, as I found out today, his owner located him (apparently he ran off, famous pitbull move) and was BEATING him senseless in my work parking lot because he ran off. Now I feel completely guilty that I DIDN'T just take him home and love and care for him like he should have been...
What would you guys do in this situation? Apparently he comes around a lot, should I nab him next time, or am I over stepping my boundaries? I'm just so mad and angry that someone could hit him like that, he was SOOO sweet.
Thoughts?

It really hurts my heart to think of him, being hit and scared, I also heard he was being drug down the highway. He was on his back, being drug, with his paws in the air, because he didn't want to go!
I'm really, just FURIOUS about this whole situation, I wish I had seen that guy doing that, I would have run him over.

The sources are TWO co-workers and a business lady across the street called to tell us someone was beating their pitbull in our parking lot.

Well, the local shelter is called Gastineau Humane Society, and if I take him there, what's to stop the owner from claiming him, taking him home, and beating him worse for costing him money now?!?!

When I see a stray dog the first thing I do is look for a collar so I can notify the owners. If they don't have a collar, then I always take them in. I contact animal control, the Humane Society, and other animal shelters in the area to let them know that I found a dog. I give them a picture and written description of the dog, along with my phone number so the owner can contact me. I have found many stray dog's owners this way. If the owners don't come forth, then they don't deserve the dog anyways, and we place the dog up for adoption. I work at a vet clinic, so we are always able to find a loving responsible home for the dogs.
In your case, I would look out for the dog in the future, if I found him, I would take him in. I can't handle people beating their dogs. I would probably end up keeping this dog, I love pit bulls!! And I eventually want to get a blue and white neutered male, so it would be perfect. I would have my sweet pit bull, and he would have a loving home, and never get beat again. I know you know about the breed, and if you weren't able to keep him, you would be able to find him a responsible loving NEW home!!! Good luck! I hope you find this little blue boy, and find him a better home!
**You aren't stealing the dog if you take him in. You found him as an unidentified stray dog (YOU didn't know he was owned by anyone). You wouldn't get in trouble, and it is the right thing to do. If this case happened to me in my area, I would try to help the dog myself, BEFORE calling animal control, because around here animal control euthanizes pit bulls, no matter what!! If animal control in your area does this also, I would try to help the dog myself first, if you can't, then I would call a rescue organization.

the next time the dog shows up either call Animal control or take him to Animal Control. Tell them what happened the last time you found the dog. Then ask them to examine the dog for abuse. Hopefully they will keep the dog and neuter the owner. Also give them your name if you are serious about adopting the dog as your own. You never know what might happen.
P.S. Check to see if the dog has collar with any tags on it. If it does, remember to take it and throw it away before turning the dog over to to Animal Control. They will more then likely site him for not having the dog properly tagged. Then he will have to buy new tags for the dog. Hey, maybe he will blow up in front of the Animal Control people. Plus to would'nt hurt the dog to get some proper care for a little while.

Wow, that's sad. I don't understand why people beat animals. When you see him again and he's by himself take him. He has no collars or anything that would suggest that he has an owner.
If you don't get the chance to get him in the next couple of days, then call the animal control, or the police and tell them what happened. Animal cruelty is against the law, and he should be reported. But like I said I would first try to get the dog myself.
Good Luck, and be careful.

Take a collar and leash along with you and keep it handy, if you see him again take him home if you want him. Since he had no collar or identification tags, he's free game as far as I'm concerned. He may be microchipped though but if that's the case you can find his owner and then report him for animal abuse if you catch him in the act. Doesn't sound like he has a very good home, if you can believe the source that said he was beating him senseless in the parking lot.

I would have taken him home. If I had seen the guy beating him, well I have been known to lose my cool over things like that and show the a@@ how it feels. I would take him the next time but that is me. Dose this guy know that abusing a dog can turn them into killers.,

Wow. That is just heart breaking. I totally understand your wanting to do something to help, but you've got to make sure you go about it in the right way. Simply snagging the dog the next time he comes around wouldn't work. No matter how bad the owner is, your stealing the dog (especially if they live in your neighborhood) won't work as a long term solution. Look into reporting the guy for animal abuse.

I would nab him the next time he comes around and re home him or keep him. If your co-workers see anything like this again, they need to call 911.
It wouldn't hurt to file a report with animal control, or at leat call them and see what they can do.

Convince the person you saw witness the beating call animal control, or the cops. You can't file a complaint if you didn't see it happen, but they can. Maybe the dog will get taken away then and you can adopt him.
Otherwise, you'll have to steal him, and that could lead to bigger problems if you have nowhere to hide him. Especially if the dog is particularly distinctive looking and could be spotted by a friend.

And no one who witnessed the abuse called the police? Shame on them. Since the dog was abused, he may be a little "off". Post Traumatic Syndrome. Do you have small children at home. If so, I would be careful bringing him home as a pet. But do rescue him, ok?
