ok, i'm 18 and in college, so this is kinda new to me. i have eaten a lot of pumpkin seed the last 2 days, and i realized that i have a case of constipation, so i've stopped eating the seeds. but today, when i went to the bathroom, i found that my feces had dark red spots of blood along the surface. so my question is this: do you think it was just from the constipation, or should i call my doctor?

Check up will be the best. Just to rule out any pathology. Though proly it is due to trauma caused by hard stools. Use anusol ointment if you have pain asoociated with defecation.
Good luck!

Did you have any pain while using the bathroom? I googled it and there seemed to be agreement that pumpkin seeds should be easy to digest, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that some of them made it through and may have irritated the bowel lining as they passed through. Constipation alone generally doesn't result in bloody stool. If you're having other symptoms like abdominal pain, that could signal something more serious, but if the blood stops after not eating them and you don't have pain, it's probably a result of the seeds. Of course, if you're worried, it doesn't hurt to call and ask some questions and get a professional opinion. Serious things like colon cancers, etc, are pretty rare in younger people, but not unheard of. Hope you feel better.

if the blood was red, it was likely just internal hemmorhoids that were irritated by the hard stool. If you see black tarry stools (they really do look like tar) then you have a serious problem that needs the attention of a doctor. In the meantime, you can soften your stools by getting docusate sodium at your local drug store, take one with a full glass of water every morning, no more hard stools or constipation.

is it dark brownish or bright red? bright red is new blood, but dark is old, meaning deeper inside your colon and not from a surface lesion (from anus, hemmoriods). Possibly you have inflammed your colon with the seeds. Stop eating them, and wait a few days. if it doesnt clear up, go to the dr.
