well, first you interpret the brief... surfaces...

which means getting close, think of the textures of surfaces, think of what you want to show... whats in the reflections... BMW did a gorgeous shot of a 5 series onthe thames embankment, you couldnt see the car at all, just the bmw badge in a corner... butt they shpwed the reflections of london on the bonnet... very nice....

organic stuff is full of detail, and it usually symetrical...

but think laterally, as a photographer its upto you to interpret what the customer wants, because believe me, they havent got a clue...

personally, id be looking at people, their faces, their hands, they contain a wealth of information...

and id use very slow film, 50asa... and id use direct daylight, the harshness builds acutance....

get a copy of the big black book, its the advertisers bible... and its full of styles and examples of photographers work.

look at baileys work... its all faces and hands... low angles and hard light on slow film...

good luck

Have you no imagination?

Derelict & decayed? Visit a junkyard.

Water & reflections? Lakes, ponds, puddles. Reflections in windows or mirrors.

Surfaces? Rough, smooth. Use sidelight to show texture.

Color? Anywhere you look.

I suggest you go to a Chapter's store to their photo section. They should have what you are looking for or, go to a store that sells cameras, film, etc. they usually have some magazines on "how to do it" and some exhibit pictures from the experts.
