When the laws changed, were they released, given shorter sentences, or did nothing happen? If changes dealing with drug laws today were to happen, do you think people would be released or would nothing happen?

They were given pardons by the US secretary of state.

Most sentences stand as determined at the time of being found guilty. It would be the same if possession of marijuana (any amount) became a felony with a minimum of, say 20 years in jail, the persons in jail now would not be affected.

I don't believe they were released, and why should they get any leniency? They broke a law when it was a law. They knew the punishments they would face. The same thing would happen today if MJ or harder drugs became legal.

Punishment for crimes is relative to the laws in effect when the crime is committed, changing the law does not change your sentence.
