PIs are an interesting lot. Most of the ones I have encountered were very shady and tried to get away with as much vaguely legal activities as possible to get their info. Some were straight up professionals that should have been cops, but they said that they didn't like having to answer to a superior officer and they had more leeway with the laws than cops do.

Although I've never had to work with private investigators, most cops I know have a very low opinion of them. Most are ex-cops that were fired or worse have no law enforcement experience at all. There is a reason they work outside the normal legal channels. Every so often you hear about one getting into trouble for doing something illegal. If you are thinking of hiring one check with the Better Business Bureau or go with a referral from someone you trust.

I believe the "catch" word here is "had" to work with private investigators.

Can't say that I've "HAD" to work with a private investigator...although I've had one or two work collectively to obtain a common goal!
