is EVIL. okay, so i understand that americans are overweight and stuff, and that we need to help that. gym class can do that, but the work is hard for me, and alot of other kids. we have to run around the gym like hamsters in a wheel for 10 minutes every day, and then go outside and play some sport or another. sometimes i get these cramps in my side and it hurts to breath, but i cant stop running because then i get marked down, and then the cramp gets worse, so on. the gym teacher says its not supposed to hurt when u do the run but it DOES. and then he says "if u had gotten exersize over the summer it wouldnt hurt" but the fact is that it DOES hurt. and we can't walk.. or else we get points off. not even just to catch our breath. THEN we go outside and i get eaten alive by mosquito's. but thats not my main point. i hate the run. i could handle 5 minutes, maybe even 7. but 10 is just too much. and im not overwieght or anything. im healthey too.
does anybody else think this is unfair?

oh and please dont tell me "ten minutes isnt THAT long" unless you actually run ten or more minutes a day. and please dont judge me as lazy because im not, and running ten minutes is just difficult for me, and alot of other kids too.
oh and this class actually counts towards my graduation so i cant just let myself fail.

Actually I think 10 mins. is very reasonable to ask, but if you get cramps let's deal with that. Try going to the bathroom just before gym starts, a moderate amount of stored up pee can cause cramps when you're running. That should take care of the problem, if not make sure you're not eating too much before you start running (best to wait an hour, maybe more after a meal). And it may not seem ladylike but it might help to belch a bit also before running.
If you need, try practicing running before or after school for 10 mins to build yourself up. Consider this your homework to make the grade.
And if nothing I said does the trick and it still hurts, you might try going to the doctor and see what he says.

I do agree with letter grading for gym class but I think it should be based on your own progress. Yes, you have to take the Physical Fitness Tests, that is a national thing, but I dont think that should solely determine your grade. I think your teacher should take a baseline at the beginning of the year in a lot of areas (how many crunches you can do, how many push-ups, your mile time, etc...) and then have a rubric for determining your letter grade based on your progress throughout the course. That is only fair. Also, I think kids should have the opportunity to do reports, projects or posters to get extra credit. Fitness and Wellness are not only about what you can do physically but what you know in terms of diet, lifestyle, etc... So, for the less athletically inclined, maybe a poster on the food pyramid would bring up a less than great gym grade. Besides, the kid who does the project would learn valuable information that would help in everyday life as he or she did the project. But that's just me.....

omg that does seem unfair. you know why. becasue i joined a girls fitness class in school. just fo girls. we did a 12 minute run. it was running around this big track and field circle. i ran around it just ONCE and i got this ginormous cramp. but the thing is, we were aloud to run and walk it, but were encouraged to run it. i dont think she toook marks off, even if we stopped becasue we do how much we can. but the kids woulnt give up not even me. i would walk halfway and run halfway. until the 12 minutes were over. it was very diffuclt for me, becasue i havnt excercises or ran for such a long time, though im normal in weight. its maybe becasue u arnt used to it. even if u do it all the time it can be painful. we do this walk/run program in ourfitness class, 2 times a week. we run 1 minute and walk two mintues. after 2 weeks, she increased the time to walk 1 minute and run 1 minute. it was hard but i could do it, becasue we did it all the time. though this might sound boring, maybe if on soem free time, u were able to do this with some music outside 1 minute run , 1 minute walk for 15 minutes, it might come more naturally for you, becsue im seroius, when we did that i barly ever got another cramp again, if i did it only lasted like 1 minute and was very small. maybe u can suggest this idea to ur teacher. but when we did this we went off school property and went around the neighbourhood. so do it like 15 minutes back and forth, it could really help out. also u know what! once when my class did the running, instead ofd bringing water, i brought gatorade!!!! and omg, without nopticing that dink totally boosted my energy. i thought that drink was a joke, but it actually helped me out. just bring some money buy it in the school vending machine and ur all off. maybe do a couple of steches too. well good luck, and dont give up! O and one more thing. me and my friend tried jogging lighyl since this want a race but just jogging at ur pace. jogg slowly but enugh to keep u going, and u wont get cramps hopeful wel good luck

Wow, you might be able to run for ten minutes without problems if you just keep doing it. And in the end you give yourself the advantage of becoming somewhat physically fit and an opportunity to live a long healthy life.

I HATED gym class too.. I got the same cramps. My best advice (since you are stuck with gym anyway) is to go to a park with friends, or by yourself - whichever, and walk for a minute, then run, then walk, then run... Get used to it on your own, and it won't be as bad in gym. I hate running still.......but my goal is to get into shape enough where I can run w/out pain each day. It will be awhile. *lol*

maybe your teacher should have started out with less time, but kids all over the USA are taking gym. they even passed a law here that every kid in every grade has to have 30 minutes of some kind of physical activity every day. it will get easier the longer you run ( I mean the more days you run.) you can't change it, so deal with it.

thats nothing seriously.! my teacher was also a star soccer coach and he use to make us run for 25, do around 50 push-ups (military style even for the girls), 50 sit-ups, and 2 other leg things that i dont know the name of. by the end of the year we were so healthy LOL. just always try your best. as long as he sees you put in a good effort you'll get a good mark in gym, you'll also get very fit!:)

That pain in your side is from being dehydrated, drink more water. Drink more water and less soda, and pace yourself when you run. It's not like they are doing something that is bad for you.
