Ooh, rattled a few cages with this question. Reckon the jury is out and responses about 50/50 for and against. And what the hell is roflmfao?

I'm with you, Cherrypicker. Along with all the other stupid abbreviations that go with it.

No, I like it, within reason; if a person would use it after every sentence as someone described, that would indeed get annoying. But if there's just one LOL or ROFL's in a message, it's cool; I agree with Mustbe that it shows the person writing the message is having a good time. What's wrong with that?

I don't like mails all full of 'chat speak'; if I need an abbreviation dictionary to decipher the message, I get annoyed too. But the basic (internet) abbreviations, like LOL, BRB, FYI and a handful of others should be fine. We used *some* abbreviations offline all along, long before the internet even existed. I think the over-use of some folks who write nothing but "w8, CU @ 2" has caused some people to dislike any and all use of them, but I think that is an overreaction. Abbreviations in moderation are just fine!

I think lol is fine, it shows a humorous reaction. It is so hard to convey emotions like laughter, sarcasm, etc in emails. Ones that annoy me are the ones that get out of hand, like ROFLMFAO and so on. I think a simple smiley face, lol, or a frown is acceptable. Any more and i roll my eyes.

No, I've talked to some people who find lol annoying. I'm not one of them; I use it all the time. But when I'm talking to someone who I know doesn't like it, I won't use it. I say "ha, ha!" instead.

roflmao means "rolling on floor, laughing my a** off."

I agree with you. My problem is that I don't understand all but the simple ones.
I also dislike the way text language is being used it's fine for telephones but not 4 written language. Excuse my use should have typed for. It's not a good example for children. No wonder so many potential employers complain about literacy.

It really gets on my nerves when people use it for no reason, at the end of every sentence and just for something to say.

I had a friend comment my myspace page and say " have a great weekend. lol"

What was there to laugh about? Maybe she secretly doesn't like me and was being sarcastic and really wishing me a bad week end.

things that don't make sense really irk me.

yeah, I think so! I use it ALOT! Even my 65 year old mom uses it. It is a universally agreed upon abbreviation and probably isn't going to go away- sorry!!

Its really annoying. People just write lol and thats it. You wonder why they thought that that was worth putting it when it had nothing to do with the conversation.

No. I find most of the abbreviations for e-mail annoying. Too girly and cutesy for me.

No you're not. I find it very annoying too. It's become way overused, and I wish these people would just stop it. I actually don't like reading questions or answers that have alot of the "text" typing in them.

People managed to write effectively for thousands of years without resorting to LOL or :) to convery their feelings.

Besides, if it isn't "out loud," it isn't really laughing.
