Lincoln, Abraham
In 1843, after he lost a campaign for Congress, he wrote to his supporters: "It was everywhere contended that no Christian ought to vote for me because I belonged to no church, and was suspected of being a Deist."
Every child is taught about Lincoln's birth in a log cabin, but what is not taught is that he rejected Christianity, never joined a church, and even wrote a treatise against religion.

Lincoln, who might have been simply a monotheist without a religion. We know his mother was a Melungeon, which might have influenced his beliefs.
