You have to remember that until the Middle Ages, there were no chapters or verses in the Bible.
So, ignore the fact that NOW they're separate chapters. Originally, Genesis was meant to be read as a continuous narrative. That's how it was passed down for many generations before it was written down. And it was told the exact way that the ancient Israelites USUALLY told their stories.
In Genesis 1, an overview of the entire creation is given. Then, in Genesis 2, the narrator goes back and gives a more specific accounting; in this case, the creation of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. It is not a contradiction, it's two separate accounts. However, from the way it's worded in Genesis 2, it's implied that God had already formed the "beasts" out of the ground.

Aaaah. This is good.
This shows the logical side of GOD. This shows that GOD DOESN'T just snap his fingers and make trees and crap just hop up out of the ground. This shows that GOD's masterpiece, the Universe, doesn't run independantly of rational means. I mean, you have to have seeds before you can have plants, right? Of course.
So, for all of you out there that think that the Universe (or even just the Earth) just hopped up from nothing because GOD said so, think again!! This badboy was put together the old fashioned way... piece by piece!!!

If you are talking about the creation of mankind (Adam) and the creation Adam (the man in the garden) it is because the word Adam means mankind (ie the people who lived in the land of Nod where Adam's (the man in the Garden) son met and married.

Because the order of creation is not the information the passages were written to convey. They were both written to convey one message - that God is the origin and Creatort of all things. Both passage convey this truth clearly. Therefore both passages are "true", regardless of any inconsistencies in irrelevant details.
