My brother's wife has recently started talking about suicide and making statements like, "I'm not going to be around much longer." She's taking anti-depressants and has started to withdraw into herself verses communicate or socialize with others. My brother called me to ask me what he should do? I suggested he call her psychiatrist and let him know what's going on. Five minutes later he called back and said her psychiatrist refused to speak with him, that he cannot talk about her or talk with him. I have no idea what to suggest and my brother is afraid she'll follow through with it. Any suggestions?

If she recently started taking anti-depressants that could be the problem,. I know it sounds stupid they are supposed to make you less depressed but clinical studies show that a side effect is suicidal thoughts. If her psychiatrist refuses to speak to your brother I suggest that he take her to the nearest hospital and have a 72 hour hold put on her. Explain that she has been talking about harming herself. That you tried to tell her psychiatrist and he refuses to discuss it with you. I wish you luck

It depends on what state you're in. Usually people who threaten suicide are just talking but it could be that the antidepressants she's taking aren't the right ones. Her doctor is full of you know what. On hearing that she's suicidal he should have taken action, asked to see her, etc. If she continues, then her husband should take her to the nearest hospital er. And by the way, get a different dr.

You must persist with the psychiatrist emphasizing that it is a matter of life and death concerning your brother's wife or tell him he must do so and to not give up until he gets an answer about what to do. Remind the psychiatrist that he/she is responsible for your brother's wife and no response could mean litigation.

I am a firm believer that anybody who seriously wants to end their own life, finds a way to do so......quietly so as not to be prevented.

Anybody who publicly declares an intention to kill themselves is asking for help. It's good that she is getting medical help but she might need to adjust her meds.

There is nothing wrong with informing the shrink. If your brother feels as though not enough is being done, he should contact another doctor.

Call the police, they can tell you where to turn. Not 911 your police station. Then if nothing call a suicide hot line. They will for sure know.Keep a record of all her threats. If your brother is her husband and told them she was threatening suicide something is wrong. They should take her threat serious.Does she have children? Will she hurt them?

People that do that sort of stuff are crying for help. If she really wanted to off herself it would have been done and over with. Sit and LISTEN, the best thing everyone can do right now is be supportive.

Call a suicide hotline or the police and explain to them. They may put her in mental facility under a suicide watch.
