It's a known fact that there are 2 asteroids within our solar system whose trajectory brings them in a near collision with earth in about 30 years for one of them specifically.
NASA back in 1997 or 1995, where able to land a satellite on an asteroid.
This is the next step in trying to see if they can change the trajectory or explode an asteroid so that it can avoid impacting the earth. It's also for studying purposes, do you know what asteroids are made of? No one knows, they're going to collect data from them as well.
This isn't a mystery nor a cover-up.
As for the incident you saw on the History channel, there are a lot of things we don't know about and can't possibly understand without going into a mass panic-attack.
I'm sure these employees are now talking because the idea of there being UFOs is not so far-fetched anymore.
There can't possibly be cover-ups in this day and age, and if there are, it's for our own good...I'd hate to find out there are aliens orbiting our earth waiting for the chance to collect their human-farm for their consumption. - How awful would that be? Can you imagine the widespread panic? It's not a malicious or earth shattering secret, it's a type of "crowd control," and protection of mankind.

I love those History Channel shows that present the theories of wackjobs as if they're based on actual facts and evidence. They rarely present any sort of rebuttal or explanation for the claims people make. You can have a guy who calls himself a "UFO Researcher" who tells you that the government has an intact flying saucer in a warehouse in Idaho, and they won't even raise the question about how this guy knows what he's claiming.

Do you have a tinfoil hat under that pink cap?
They are exploring the asteroids because:
1) we can.
2) it helps us understand asteroid and planet formation. Are asteroids and ex planet? Or a proto planet that never was able to pull itself together?
3) asteroids have huge sources of metals. Metals are pretty cheap on Earth, but VERY expensive to pull out of Earth's gravity field. Being able to shunt an asteroid to orbit the Earth and then mine it could be very cost effective. But which asteroids and what would be needed to done to refine the metals?

the spacecraft is intended to try to divert the asteroid... it is in a direct collision course with the earth... it should hit on december 21, 2012

They are exploring asteroids to LEARN about them. There's a distinct possibility a big one could be heading for us someday, and we'd like to know how to stop it.....uh oh...did I just open a can of worms for another Crimmson tangent by saying that? lol

Don't you think that it's prudent for us to understand the makeup of asteroids? At some point, one might be headed towards Earth, and it would probably behoove us to have some ideas as to what to do about it...
