The spreadsheet opens twice but I only have to save it once, but if I save a new copy and rename it, it still opens two spreadsheets but thinks it is one. Really weird.

It sounds like at some point you have hit: Window>New Window and have then saved the file (with both windows open) - they will then be restored every time you open the file. If you have their name appearing in the title bar like Book1.xls:1 and Book1.xls:2 then this is what has happened.

You will just need to close one of the windows and then save the workbook again to prevent it from opening with two windows.

If two of the same workbook are opening at the same time then you have a problem with Excel. Excel is specifically designed to not let you open two files of the same type with the same name.
