Probably not. Unless it was due to a death in the family or something really serious like that. Even then, it would be best if he went some place private to cry until he can compose himself. Then its time to cut the date short. I would understand.
Its just a courteous thing to do, to keep the social situation from going awkward.
I would never cry on a first date. I don't like to cry in front of people I've known forever.

I'm going through VERY similar problems. I'm 24 and he's 29 and I found out he was lying through our entire relationship and he too cried just last week. So weird. It's a very tough call. The tears definitely have me straddling the fence because they seemed real. But then at the end of the day I had to ask myself...."If he cared that much...why would he have lied to me for sooo long?" People always say it's in a guys DNA to lie and I truly believe that. The sad part is he was lying to both of you women and both of you felt like he cared. This guy sounds selfish and insecure. I know your hurt because I feel the exact same way. Feeling of betrayal. I still haven't found my own answer. But I have found peace in trusting my gut feeling and if at one point you felt he loved you he probably did. He was just confused and very unstable. Sorry to hear that...but it's comforting to know that I'm not the only one going through a problem like this. and maybe we can help each other understand :)

--someone he is close to just died recently-->yes
--your conversation touched on a sensitive topic-->maybe
--for no apparent reason-->definitely not

ummm i dunno it kinda depends on a lot of other things. well if that ever happened to me i would think they have some serious issues they need to resolve. maybe you should talk to him about it before continuing on a date with him.
