We have a year old male cat called Timmy and a new male kitten called Krusty we've had them both from 6 weekd old, they do not seem to get along actually Timmy doesn't like Krusty! They are fine sometimes even sleeping on our bed together but most of the time Timmy growls at Krusty and will not stay in the same room as him. Krusty want's to play with Timmy but he's not interested both are able to go outside but giving them their own space has not solved the issue.
It is a pain in the bum as I am often woken up by one cat growling and hissing then the sound of fur flying and the cat flap flapping as one dives out they are driving me mad.

You can't MAKE them like each other - but you do need to make sure Timmy understands he is not being pushed out by the newcomer.
Make sure you always give Timmy his food first - make Krusty wait a couple of seconds. Always stroke Timmy first.
His nose is currently SO far out of joint that he just hates the newcomer and will do his best to make his life a misery.
However - I got 2 females 15 years ago - they arrived within a week of each other and are exactly the same age but their temperaments are so different - they STILL hate each other!
They have come to a sort of agreement as they both end up with slippers flying after them when they start squabbling - but we are forever finding big clumps of various coloured furs all over the floor!

Good luck though!

It may sound silly but i think its a bit of a personality thing. I know the experts will say its all about male pecking order and territory etc, but a year ago, i introduced a new 1yr old male to my six year old queen, and they never got on. There were times over the months that i thought i could see a light at the end of the tunnel, but eventually as time went by, if anything it got worse. Very sadly he got run over and killed and he was such a personality - a real big stoopid adolescent type, and i miss him so much, but it has put me off trying to get another cat. I thought a male and a female would be bound to get on but was wrong.

A couple of years ago, we added a new 1 yr old cat to a household with a 13 yr old male and 14yr old female. The 1 year old continually tries to mount the female, even though both are fixed, and has tried to make moves to try to establish itself as the lead cat with the male. I have figured out it is all in the nature of "cat world". I make sure I give both the older cats a lot of attention as the younger one will grab it any way he can. The younger one has now mellowed a bit... a little bit...as he knows he can also count on his time for attention too.

Sorry but you may have to accept that they will never be best buddies. Eventually they may tolerate each other but that might be all you get.
At the minute it could be that Krusty is to boisterous for Timmy and as Krusty gets older they could become better friends.

Have you ried keeping them locked in kitchen or somehwre at night for a few weeks. They will soon establish a peckin order and will gradually tolerate each other.

They may never get on 100%, but at least they will not hiss.

We ahd ours for 5 years and 2 years.
The 2 bros (5 years old) are fab, but the kitten at 2 years old is a pest to them.

They tolerate him but if he gets too boisterous they go out.

Also 1 of the older ones has left home to live somewhere else. He comes home for tea and a cuddle but the wee one turns up and off He goes.

Good luck.

I am afraid you may not ever get them to like each other. My cat Zeke doesn't like Blackie, but Blackie wants to play all the time with Zeke, she even cleans her but Zeke is such a loner, she just wants to be left alone. I have had these two cats for three years now and sometimes it is better and sometimes worse.

Just remember to give them both the same amount of love and attention. Try not to have a favorite (or at least let them know).

Good luck.

i have 2 elderly females. when the younger of the pair came to live with us 16 yrs ago, i asked the vet that same question... he had known the older for 5 yrs previous and understood her ways. the vet's answer was that they would never be best friends and the best we could hope for was that they didn't kill each other. here we are in 2007, and it's like living with 2 elderly sisters who barely tolerate one another. their common ground is the big dog!

It may be too late for you but try keeping a pillow/ bed in two seperate rooms. and keep the cats locked in them for a few days [with food and everything] and then a day later switch the cats. they'll sniff the beds and recognize the smell and soon be comfortable with eachother.. usually cats don't get along they just mind their own business
but good luck!
