If you lined up all the guys I've ever been with the only thing they'd have in common is their height (tall). It was that annoying 'thing' that attracted me to them, the thing that even now I cannot put my finger on but for some reason I still like. For that reason I'd say I was a random dater in that there is no specific type I go for. Are you a random or a specific dater?

I used to go for the humor, laid back, bad boy types. I sat down one day and analyzed these relationships and tried to find something they had in common that may have been the reason the relationships didn't work.
Boooy, did I find it! I found I dated guys with "complexes"--dependency issues, and a lack of self-confidence (although they all SEEMED confident--but they weren't). They needed more than a woman could ever offer them.
I had to consciously change my "type". I began looking at other traits, like, dependability, honestly, and faith. These were much harder traits to recognize up front, and it was hard passing up a few guys who met my prior standards, but I'm so happy I took the effort and kept looking. I have found a good guy now, whom I don't foresee any major obstacles, who is good to me.
So I've been both--and in my experience, "specific" is the way to go. As long as you know what "type" is suited for you. :)

I'm a random dater... but I don't think you are one. You still have a pattern (height). I'm not only random in that sense but I'm also a serial dater. Dates can be a lot of fun so the more the merrier.

i was thinking about this the other day actually, and i realised that all my ex boyfriends are exactly the same.
they all have dark hair, they all have blue eyes (except the last one), theyre all about the same height, they all like the same music, most of them are in bands or play guitar etc, they all have basically the same needy, clingy, over-protective, "i need constant love and affection" personality, theyre all complete stoners and they all think theyre hilarious and that farts are actually funny. So essentially i keep falling for the same guy over and over again, and i dont know why, coz it didnt work out with any of them. and by the end of the relationship i find them so annoying, and i think "i will never go out with a guy like that again", but then the next guy comes along and he turns out exactly the same. i know there are guys out there who arent like this, but for some reason im not attracted to them. ARGH!!!

I do think i'm a specific dater. We must have a few things in common but don't have to be just alike.

I initially go for looks and then try to make conversation flow. If this is forthcoming I suggest we might meet up at a place of her choice for a drink and go from there. No initial attraction or no chemistry and forget it. Id know after 30 minutes.

I always dated randomly, since there are so many different kind of blokes I find attractive and variety is fun. Mind you I never really dated that seriously.. And I ended up with someone that really wasn't my type, or so I thought. =)
