Right now? YES!!!
Look in the paper under "help wanted"--nursing is a shoe-in for jobs right now.

The medical field is a very demanding field which requires a high level of dedication and devotion. These qualities must come from the heart. Whether you want to be a nurse, surgeon, or even a veterinarian, you must explore your field of interest. Talk to some nurses. Go and speak to a counselor at a nursing school. Find out exactly what it takes to do what you want to do, financially and phisically. Then make your decision.

It all depends on what you consider good: wages, hours, respect (or lack thereof) from doctors (and patients), opportunity to help people, risk of becoming ill yourself etc. all need to be considered.
My wife has worked in intensive care (12 hour shifts, understaffed etc), public health (9 to 5, mon-fri), home care (visiting a list of clients on weekends - with pager throughout the night) - at different points in her career.
The profession is very broad, and differs from country to country too. I'm sure if you want to, you'll be able to find a niche in the profession that suits your skills and personality.

Hi Beach Babe,
This is a hot topic. You will get differing opinions, especially from nurses. Your ultimate satisfaction with nursing may have more to do with what type of nursing you do or want to do and where you work. You can peek in at http://www.allnurses.com/
, the largest web site for nurses, and see what they say about their jobs. Please do keep in mind that many nurses go to this site to vent. However, you will never want for employment with the aging baby boomers needing help in their later years. But also keep in mind that nursing is a 24/7 job, at least at the bedside. If you choose bedside nursing, you will be working some weekends and holidays in addition to shift work.
Here is a link with sub links at Allnurses that is more specific to your question:

As long as people have wars get sick etc...
Nurses will always be needed.
A nurse I know works in an ER gets paid lots more than her spouse so he quit his job to stay home with the 5 children they have.

Yes, they say by 2010, there would be a large need for them since all the baby boomers are retiring. They make a very nice salary but it will be competitive.
Along with Police, America needs them too soon!

It depends. Do you want to do it? Personally, I think it's a good profession...as with all jobs, you have to care about it and it should be useful to the world somehow. God bless.
