Once he is done with it, he very calmly and invariably puts his paws into his pee, to walk over the "pool of urine" thus soiling them with his own pee! or the urine just flows downstream to make his paws wet. when ll he start picking his rear leg? Also tell me when should a GSD start "marking" his territory...?

He'll do it when he's ready and mature.

Some dogs need another male dog to imitate.

Good question. I have owned and trained GSD's my whole life. A male gsd wills start raising his leg anywhere between 1-2 years of age and at first they will only do it occasionally. Then over time it will become something they do almost every time. They will start marking their territory at about 2 to 2.5 years old. They will start raising their leg long before they start to do it in order to mark their territory. Then you will start to notice on walks they are marking everything. What you have asked is perfectly normal behavior for a gsd, dont worry, sometime over the next year he will be raising his leg. :)

Not all will mark territory or lift there leg. Lifting their leg is a learned behavior so if they don't see another dog do it they will not learn. My dog is 4 and he still pees like a puppy, and does not mark. My friends dogs will lift their leg and mark anything, my flowers my newly cleaned car. They make fun of my dog but that's OK, he is alot cleaner. He goes in the grass and doesn't walk in his pee. My female on the other hand does mark territory, wherever the boys go she goes. She doesn't lift her leg but my old female would do that too.

Hey he's still a puppy. He'll start lifting his leg to mark his territory by the time he's 18 months old. If you walk him sooner because he will want to mark territory that other dogs have.

I have a 2 year old Golden Retreiver that still goes on all fours. I'm actually glad he does it that way, instead of lifting his leg on everything....but mine doesn't end up walk in it. If mine hasn't done it in 2 years I doubt he will ever. Sorry I'm not much help on this one.

Not all males will lift their legs. I have a male chihuahua, and a female beagle/cocker mix, my male would always lift his leg, but when we got the female and she didnt, he stopped almost right away. It is all in how they want to do things. Plus, usually when they do not lift their leg, they tend not to mark as much, that was my case anyways!!

usually its a sign that he is still a growing puppy. when he finally turns from a puppy to a grown dog, he will start lifting his leg and marking his territory

Usually by 6 mnths of age. One day he will just do it. If he has another older male dog around he could learn it earlier. But don't worry, it is an instinct and will appear on it's own.

He's confused. Don't worry though he will grow out of it. He might be imitating some female dogs just for fun, I mean he's a puppy. But the "technique" will come to him in time. Just wait for it. Enjoy your puppy!
