My female cat went into heat for the first time at *four months old*

She had her kittens when she was just about six months old. So don't wait that long!

Sorry, but for the poster wanting you to wait for 6-7 months is a good way to find a litter of kittens on the way. My female kittens got spayed at 14 weeks, and depending on the skill of your vet, it can be done for both males and females at a very young age. Some vets use teeth maturation as a guide, and others want to wait until the kitten is 4 pounds.

So around four months or even a bit sooner is probably a safe bet. The sooner, the better as procreation is only part of what you want to avoid. As they come towards sexual maturity, they may decide to start marking their territory.

The best way, however, is with bringing in your cat the night before to the vet. They cannot have food or water the night before the surgery, and taking them in the night before works out best.

IDeal: 5-6 months for both

BUT: Do know that the YOUNGEST (in rare cases) a female has been known to get pregnant is 4 months, and the youngest (again, in rare cases) a male would be able to GET a feamale pregnant would be 5 months.. So fix them at 5 months if you can, and keep the girl inside from 4 months until fixed.. if you want to take no chances...

Please don't wait past 6 months for either.. She could get pregnant, and your boy could start spaying if not fixed soon enough!!

Thanks for being a responsible pet owner!!

Some vets will recommend getting cats spayed or neutered around 6 months, but some cats will reach sexual maturity by the time they reach 4 months. Shelters and rescues will S/N as long as the cat weighs at least 2 lbs., so you've got to make a choice whether to do it early or wait until 5 or 6 months. If you do it before the female's first heat cycle, you'll cut down drastically on her chances of getting certain types of reproductive cancers.

i got my male fixed at 6 months. but different vets will tell you different ages. i have 3 cats. i went to a different vet for my other two and that vet said 6-7 months for a male and 8-9 months for my female. call your vet and see what they will allow. there is a big things between vets about what is too young to fix them. if your considering getting them declawed its best to do it all at once and most vets give you a discount fixing and declawing at the same time. female cats are more expensive to fix for some reason. if your on a budget, get the male fixed right away so it doesnt spray. i had a male cat once that i waited too long to get it fixed and it startede sparying around my house. even after getting it fixed, he wouldnt stop, had to get rid of him.

Female cats can go into heat as young as five months. I would suggest you call your vet to see when the best time to get them fixed would be (they will probably say 4-6 months). As long as you don't see any funny behavior from your female you know she is not in heat.
