Gout is a build up of uric acid.
It is usually a burning pain and swelling of the joint that comes on suddenly like and "attack".
To treat it you need to take an anti-inflammatory.
Also changes in the diet can help with the pain such as lowering intake of beer and caffeine.
Whenever I get it I eat canned or fresh cherries this helps balance out the acid.

This "Gouty Arthritis" is one of the many forms of arthritis.

Gout is one of the many types of arthritis. I won't go into details because the first poster answered that so well.

The only thing I will say is that with all types of arthritis there are many things we can do outside of just taking medication.

I live with Rheumatoid Arthritis and although I did attempt to take the meds the doctor prescribed I got minimal results, but regardless I wouldn't have been willing to take all these meds for life anyway. So I was forced to find other methods of treatment.

There are many things that people have success with and at
http://www.livingwithrheumatoidarthritis.com/home_remedies.html you can read about some of the home remedies that others have tried and had success with.

For Gout I would use sour cherries daily and adjust my diet elliminating foods that cause inflammation (http://www.livingwithrheumatoidarthritis.com/Inflammatory-foods.html)

I love the Oil Pulling and would recommed that to everyone.

Arthritis is an all-inclusive term for an often dibilitating disease that can affect people at any age. There are over 100 types of arthritis, of which gout is one.
"Gout is a form of arthritis caused when uric acid in the blood forms crystals in the joints. Gout attacks can come on suddenly. The joint becomes tender, swollen, red, and very painful. The pain often reaches its peak in a matter of hours. A low fever of 99 to 101 is common.
Gout often attacks the big toe joint. Attacks may also involve the ankles, kness, elbows, fingers, and other joints. Gout attacks can last from several days to weeks. Between attacks, months or years can go by with no symptoms. Attacks gradually occur more often, last longer, and become more severe. Medication may be prescribed to prevent gout attacks.
Gout is far more common in men than in women. Other risk factors include a family history of gout, obesity, excessive alcohol use (particularly beer), use of aspirin, and very low-calorie diets.
*Although you don't need to avoid specific foods, a low-calorie diet that does not contain large amounts of protein is a wise choice. Avoid fasting and very low-calorie diets.
* Avoid or cut back on alcoholic beverages, especially beer. Alchohol increases uric acid production.
* Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water each day. This will help your kidneys flush uric acid through your system.
* Donot take aspirin.
* As soon as you know you are having a gout attack, go to bed, elevate the affected joint, and stay there until the most severe symptoms have subsided. This may help prevent a second attack. Create a tent over your toe or joint to reduce pressure from bed sheets.
* Take ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen sodium to relieve pain. Do not take aspirin because it may make it harder kidneys to get rid of the excess uric acid.
* If your doctor has prescribed medication for use during an attack, take it as prescribed. Avoid using more than the prescribed dose. Stop taking the drug and call your doctor if reactions such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramping appear."
