O, you poor thing. I have a boy the same age and Focalin is working for him, thank goodness.
FIRST of all - please take care of yourself! You cannot care for your child in this stressed out state. Enlist the help of friends, family, and paid caregivers to keep your sanity. Do not feel guilty taking a time out for yourself.
Has your son been evaluated by a behaviorial specialist? Sounds like a bit more than ADHD is going on here.
Good luck!

I know you find this hard to believe, but at only 6, he will probably get a lot worse as the years go by. My neighbor is 9 and was diagnosed ADHD when he was 5. His parents tried all the medications and behaviorial therapy. Nothing works. He is a rotten brat plain and simple.
He called the cops on his parents Saturday because they wouldn't let him play his video games. The cops explained to his parents that there is a special place for children like him away from home. I think it's a reform school. If they don't put him away, he will surely kill somebody. He is mouthy, violent and starts home fires at 2 AM.
His parents are having to choose between their freedom from jail and him. They just got out of court for felony child neglect when he called the cops at a strangers house next door to where they visit regularly. He was upset because his mom carried the younger boy upstairs before him. Before she got back downstairs to get him from the van, he had already called the cops and told them he didn't know where his parents were. Luckily, the charges were dropped when they realized how bad the kid is.
You definitely need to focus on helping yourself with regular counseling to keep your sanity. Nothing you do will help your son. That's been my experience. You want to get the law on your side while he's young. And you have to go through all the motions of medication and counseling for him to keep child protective services off your back. Good luck!

Doctors nowadays are nothing but pill-dispensers.Before he was given his first pill, your' son should have received intense behavioural modification, and you should have been prepped on changes in some of the things you do to help facilitate a more structured environment(I'm not calling you a bad parent, but he didn't get that unglued without help). If ADHD meds aren't working, one of the reasons might be chronic anxiousness, the poisonous methamphetamine in the ADHD meds make those symptoms worse. If anxiousness is the culprit,he'll need a prescription for different poison. But,whatever the problem is,dope alone isn't gonna do it.Behavioural modification is the key.Tell your' Doc to put the pen down, stop writing scripts and start doing the work,or send you to someone who can.Seriously, his future is in your' hands, and right now,it's not looking good.Don't despair, though, things can get better, just don't let the 'professionals' take any shortcuts.Good luck to you both.

I'm sorry for you and your son. Hang in there. My son is 10 and was diagnosed with ADHD last year as well as LD for reading comprehension. He has tried adderall and it helped but he was losing weight and became very moody. We are now trying Foclain time released but I don't know if this is going to be the right medicine or not. He seems the same but he eats at lunch now. My son's behavior is not as server as your son's but I understand what you are going through. I am also a 2nd grade teacher. I don't agree with putting kids on meds unless they need it and only a doctor can determine that. I support my doctor's decision to put my son on meds for he is now an A/B student. He was never a behavior problem in school just at home. His mind would just wander at school and he would tap his foot all the time to control himself at school to keep from getting in trouble. I wish you the best of luck and just know you are not the only one going through this.

I am not an expert, but my brother is hyperactive and autistic and I have worked with children with different disorders. I would suggest seeking alternatives to drugs. Have you ever had him allergy tested? My mom had that suggested from a allergist friend and it turned out that he was allergic to so many things that he came into contact with on a daily basis that it was making him sick and affecting his behavior in a big way.
It didn't cure him but it sure helped. Also have you had him tested for autism? It could be something completely different from hyperactivity and the drugs just aren't working (or making the problem worse) because he hasn't been properly diagnosed. You didn't specify what kind of doctor you have brought him to, but if it is just your pediatrician, its time to start seeking the specialists. My mother also did a ton of research on the healing/ therapeutic properties of things found in nature ( extracts of berries, mushrooms, plants, etc.) as an alternative to my brother taking drugs. Explore all your options and seek second opinions! Good luck!

I am by no means an expert but to me a stranger I don't think the answer lies in medicines. I would think he needs some sort behavioral therapy. You don't want to just sedate him, you need to get to the root of why he's acting like this. Ask the doctor about child psychiatrists and behavior therapists, plus mental health things like possible autism or schizophrenia.
Hope it works out!

I am assuming he has been diagnosed with ADHD. The diagnosis may have been incorrect or incomplete. A recent Dr. Phil show had an ADD/ADHD specialist who indicated that a huge perentage of ADD/ADHD diagnoses are incorrect.
Try finding an ADD/ADHD specialist in your area, and ask him about behavioral as well as medical treatments. Your son may have a condition other than ADHD.

My son has tried all of the above too. The only thing that has worked for him is Concerta. It is a slow release pill so you give it to him in the morning and it works all day. He eats well and doesn't get irritable. I hoped this helped.

is it possible that the reason the meds don't work is because he isn't adhd at all? could it be that he is just poorly behaved on purpose? maybe skip the MD and go see a behaviorist? If you live in Orange County, Ca. there is an excellent private school(that will help you make your school district pay for) call MARDAN CENTER of EDUCATIONAL THERAPY. they can help, regardless of his cause.

I used to work with First Grade, and we had
a low number of children, sort of like your Son. Out of 100 children there may have been four or five with problems. Maybe one like your child. Each child could be alittle different with behavior problems on top of the medical problems they have.
Go to Dr.Phil's web site,
he may be able to help you.
