I have an old 1994 Rover Metro and although my driving instructor reckons i should take the test in his car, i feel like i'd rather take the test in my own.

Not only have i had more driving experience in my own car, but i find it a lot more easier to handle and after all, this will be the car that i'll be using if and when i pass. I hardly ever stall the engine in my own car but with my instructors i can stall it three or four times a lesson and compared to the four or five hours a week driving experience i have in my own car, i am only spending a couple of hours in my instructors.

My question is what are the requirements for taking the test in your own car? I know the DSA have a list on their website but i'm concerned about any technicalities. A friend of my brothers was apparantly turned down because of some kind of modification. Also, the handle of my left mirror has snapped off but can still easily be adjusted from the outside. Would this be a problem?

Technically, if you are competent enough drive then it shouldn't matter what car you take the test in. What happens when your car breaks down or wear out beyond repair, are you going to walk because you don't think you'll be comfortable in an other car?

If you know how to drive then just suck it up and do it, don't sweat the little things.

Makes a lot of sense to me, as if you pass this will be the car you will be driving on the roads, not the instructors, hopefully you won't need to drive that one again. The only reason not to would be if you don't have proper insurance, and there was an accident.

Mirror adjustments are not required to be made from the inside.
And as long as your car passes the inspection, and you have proof of Insurance you should be fine.
Even if you vehicle fails you can still come back in your instructors car.
So really you don't have anything to worry about.
Good Luck!

The mirror handle is not an issue. Just make sure the car will pass the requirements of your State. Make sure all lights are working, windshield wipers, horn etc.
