LDS stands for Latter-day Saint. About 97% of the world's Mormons are LDS Mormons.

"Mormon" is a nickname used for believers in the Book of Mormon. The LDS Church is the largest organization of these believers, but there are about 20 others as well.

LDS people think they are the only Mormons, which is why you'll see them define "Mormon" as "a nickname for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

Warren Jeffs, for example, is Mormon. He's not, however, LDS. He belongs to one of those other, more obscure, Mormon churches.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, these are LDS. Mormon is a nickname that unfortunately now lumps "splinter groups" in with the LDS members.

We are not the same as the "splinter groups"

I generally like being called a Mormon but this nickname now equates us with groups that ignore the laws of the land.

So Now I "have" to distinguish us by saying "LDS Mormon"

Annoying -- I know

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints- or LDS for short- is the main religion that most refer to as Mormons, we call ourselves LDS usually rather than Mormon.

Don't feel stupid. You got it right on.

Mormon is technically a nickname for a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

LDS = Latter Day Saint

I guess it's like referring to a member of the Grand Old Party as a "Republican".

Yes, "Mormons" is a nickname for followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It stems from the book of scripture that we use, in addition to the Bible, called "The Book of Mormon". This is a book of ancient scripture, similar to the Bible, which details the teachings of ancient inhabitants in the Americas and testifies, as does the Bible, of Jesus Christ.

warren jeffs is not a 'mormom' -- he's FLDS -- a group that has no more to do with the LDS or Mormon church based in SLC as the Church of England does with the Roman Catholic

Yes, they are one and the same, and I suggest you stay away from the cult of anti-Mormons. Like CARM and all those. They are liars, out right liars, and liars can't be Christians.
