le is definite article(la for feminine)
un is undefinite article(une for feminine)


e.g:un chat :a cat means any cat
le chat:the cat means this cat

Of course it matters, just as in English there is a difference between 'a cat' and 'the cat.' However, the usage in French is different from that of English.
